UC Riverside researchers just unearthed a hidden bug genus, and they are using Taylor Swift to force the world to pay attention

These bugs are not considered pests.

It is not often that the worlds of high-level entomology and pop music collide, but researchers at the University of California, Riverside, found themselves in this exact situation. On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the team revealed that they have officially described a new genus of Australian plant bugs, and decided to name the group ‘Swiftiephylus’ as a tribute to Taylor Swift. Needless to say, they got every Swiftie’s attention.

Doctoral researcher Sarah Schroeder, who led the work, is a lifelong fan of the singer. According to Complex, when she looked at these tiny, pale-yellow insects with distinct red markings, she immediately saw a connection to the artist. “Taylor Swift’s iconic look is her blonde hair and red lips,” Schroeder said in a university news release. “These insects are pale yellow with accents of red throughout. In the paper I refer to them as blonde.”

The four species are named to honor the singer and her discography. Swiftiephylus taylorae is named directly for the artist, while the other three species draw from her musical catalog. S. amator translates to “lover,” S. intrepidus means “fearless,” and S. poetorum serves as a nod to her album The Tortured Poets Department. The genus name itself is a combination of ‘Swiftie’, the known term for the artist’s dedicated fans, and “Phylus,” a common suffix used in this specific group of insects.

These bugs have actually been waiting in the shadows for a long time

The specimens were collected between 1995 and 2004 during a massive biodiversity survey in Australia. That expedition gathered more than 50,000 specimens, which then sat in museum drawers for decades, waiting for someone to sort through them. 

Christiane Weirauch, a UCR entomology professor who was involved in those original collections, eventually steered her Ph.D. student, Schroeder, toward the hoard. After spending years working through 593 specimens, Schroeder successfully identified 12 previously undescribed species across five new genera, including the four that make up Swiftiephylus.

It turns out that the bugs’ appearance isn’t just about looking like a pop star. These insects live on Australian she-oaks, which produce red and orange flowers. Researchers believe the blonde-and-red coloration provides essential camouflage, allowing the bugs to blend into their environment. The males also possess distinctive spines in their reproductive anatomy, though scientists are still working to understand exactly what role those structures play during mating.

While the Swift connection is the hook, the underlying science packs the real punch

Taxonomy is often viewed as a dry, academic pursuit, but Schroeder says, “Taxonomy is the cornerstone of conservation. If we don’t describe species, we don’t know they exist and can’t conserve them. Honoring Taylor through naming these species after her is a way to honor conservation science and bring attention to all the unknown diversity.”

There is a massive amount of work left to do in this field. Experts estimate that there could be as many as 30 million insect species that remain completely undocumented. By using a recognizable name, the team at UC Riverside is hoping to make this mission feel more accessible to the general public. It is a smart strategy to bridge the gap between complex biological data and the average person.

This is not the first time the music industry has left a mark on insect taxonomy

Naming species after icons is a popular way to spark interest in the natural world. In 2022, scientists named a Tennessee millipede Nannaria swiftae after the singer, and in 2023, a Costa Rican spider was named Castianeira swiftay. Even music legend Selena Quintanilla received a similar honor in 2016 when scientists named a treehopper genus Selenacentrus after her. 

The insects described in the paper belong to the family Miridae, which is the largest family of true bugs in the world, containing over 11,000 described species. Despite the large numbers, these particular bugs are not considered pests to humans or animals. They are highly specialized, often spending their entire life cycle on a single host plant. 

According to Phys.Org, Schroeder is using both traditional taxonomic methods and modern genomic data to reconstruct the evolutionary history of these bugs. She hopes to learn more about how they spread across the globe and developed such specialized lifestyles.

While some in the scientific community debate the practice of naming species after humans, Schroeder feels that if it is done with respect, it can be a powerful tool for advocacy. By connecting her personal love for the artist’s music with her professional mission as a scientist, she has managed to turn a dusty museum project into a story that the whole world is now talking about.
