Trump’s reasoning for repeatedly being attacked is simple: he thinks he is as great as Abraham Lincoln

The shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25, 2026, which was believed to be a targeted attack against President Donald Trump, has sparked widespread discussion. While some people, especially those active online, think the attack was staged by Trump officials to draw attention to him amid declining approval ratings, others believe Trump is one of the few unfortunate presidents who is repeatedly targeted for all the “great” things he is doing for the American people.
Donald Trump also has an opinion on the recurrence of such incidents. He believes people keep attacking him because he is impactful and important, like none other than Abraham Lincoln.
Donald Trump believes his impact is persuading people to attack him
The shooting incident during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25, 2026, is one of many attempts to take Donald Trump’s life. Generally speaking, there could be two main reasons why people might try to kill someone repeatedly: either they are extremely popular among the public, making them a target for some, or they are completely unpopular, and everyone hates them. Donald Trump believes it is the former that led a gunman to open fire during Saturday’s event and try to kill him.
In a clip currently circulating on social media, especially on X (formerly Twitter), Trump is seen sharing his thoughts on the subject. When asked by a journalist why he believes he’s been targeted in so many assassination attempts, Trump said, “Well, you know, I’ve studied assassinations, and I must tell you the most impactful people, the people that do the most, you take a look at the people, Abraham Lincoln, I mean, you go through the people that have gone through this where they got them…And when you look at the people…whether it was an attempt or a successful attempt, they’re very impactful people…They’re the big names. And I hate to say I’m honored by that, but I’ve done a lot.”
The man who made an assassination attempt on Trump has been charged
As of this writing, according to live updates from BBC News, Cole Tomas Allen, the prime suspect in the White House correspondents’ dinner shooting incident, has been charged with attempting to assassinate the president. He also faces two other charges: using a firearm during a crime of violence and transporting a firearm across state lines with the intent to commit a felony.
Based on these charges, if Cole Tomas Allen is convicted, here’s how long he could face in prison for each crime. For attempting to assassinate the president, if found guilty, Allen could face up to life in federal prison. For using a firearm during a violent crime, he could face up to 10 years in federal prison. Lastly, for transporting a firearm across state lines to commit a felony, he could also face up to 10 years in federal prison.
