Republican Voter Says He Was Left in ‘Total Disbelief’ After ICE Detained His Venezuelan Fiancée and Took Her Away: ‘They Are Destroying Families’

ICE continues its crackdown by arresting those they claim are illegal immigrants overstaying their welcome in the United States. In an interview with a news outlet, John Gannon detailed his experience with the organization that he alleges left him in “total disbelief” after his fiancée was taken into their custody.

Gannon, claiming to be a lifelong Republican, alleges that his fiancée Yasmin Suarez Reyes, a Venezuelan-born with Spanish citizenship, was arrested at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. Clad in plainclothes, agents were allegedly dispatched to detain Reyes in July.

“Eight ICE agents swarmed Yasmin and detained her. [They] didn’t tell us why and rustled her off to a car,” Gannon claimed. He alleges that he and his fiancée were preparing to board a flight to Las Vegas to attend a furniture convention when the incident happened.

Reyes’ immigration lawyer alleges that Reyes legally moved to the US back in 2023. She subsequently applied for asylum, but Reyes’ legal representative claimed the application is still pending. However, Reyes’ underlying permission to be on U.S. soil had reportedly lapsed before the incident occurred.

When asked about the issue surrounding the mass deportation in the US, Gannon claimed that ICE agents are choosing to detain law-abiding citizens and “not going after the hard guys.” The 75-year-old businessman alleges that the organization is only destroying families and job opportunities, and that airports are the easiest place for them to capture immigrants—with agents alleged to be camping in wait.

“Nothing like this has ever happened to me,” Gannon claimed. “I have several businesses. I’m law-abiding, and I pay a lot of tax.” He alleges that Yasmin never had a criminal record before her detainment, and “had been following” the immigration processes. “They do whatever they want and ignore the truth,” Gannon said.

Per PEOPLE, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed Reyes’ July 24 arrest and that her lawful stay in the US had expired back in January 2024. The organization claimed ongoing applications do not automatically grant legal status. “This Administration is not going to ignore the rule of law,” the Department claimed.

Reyes remains under ICE detention. Gannon claimed that following this incident, he wouldn’t be voting for Trump again in future elections. “This is like the Gestapo,” he said, drawing comparisons to Nazi Germany’s state police force.
