Things We Saw Today: Are We Looking at Captain America’s New Infinity War Shield?

[Possible spoilers for Cap’s new Infinity War accessories]

Buckle up, kids, it appears that there’s a new shield in the house.

Those dastardly toy sets always seem to be leaking new information before Marvel has released it officially. Today, as Comicbook.com points out, Twitter users captured us an eyeful of Infinity War Legends figures. Of most interest? That’d be our star-spangled man with a plan, Steve Rogers—although by appearances, he’s no longer starred nor spangled.

While we’ve talked about Steve having a Nomad-esque costume before, this is the first time we’ve glimpsed what could be the new look and shape of his shield.

Let’s zoom in:

Steve tossed his old shield down at the end of Civil War, his loyalty to BFF Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier and stance against the Sokovia Accords outweighing any other allegiances. (Also, in a total dick move he’s hopefully going to apologize for, Tony Stark told Steve he wasn’t worthy of the shield his father had made.) But Captain America just isn’t Captain America without some kind of shield, and the one we see here is exciting for a few reasons.

First of all, its material and style would seem to match the Wakandan-made fighting gauntlets we see Steve wearing in the Infinity War trailer. This implies that the new shield doesn’t just use vibranium from Wakanda, it was designed in Wakanda (likely by new and improved Tony Stark, Shuri). In the Infinity War trailer, we also see our King T’Challa saying “Get this man a shield!” as Cap comes out of the shadows, scruffy beard in play. Maybe that’s how this shield comes about.

The second reason I got extremely excited over an action figure is that the shield packed with Steve is shaped more like Cap’s old, classic, golden age shield from the comics (also seen in The First Avenger). It’s a nice touch, mingling nostalgia with what’s likely a much-updated modern shield.

Of course, we don’t know if this is some kind of interim shield, if it makes it through the movie—there are a ton of questions. But for now I’m going to appreciate this badass defensive device, as well as Steve’s outfit: looking pretty damned Nomad right now, aren’t we?

(P.S. I am obsessed with the rolled-up sleeves. Your favorite action figure until now would never.)

  • They’re rebooting (“spinning off”) Men in Black. Because everything old must be made anew. Likely grittier. (via Variety)
  • They’re rebooting the old WB angsty high school show, Roswell. More rebooted aliens, but this one I could actually get behind. (via Deadline)
  • “Harley Quinn’s New Origin Embraces Mental Illness” (via screenrant)
  • There’s a new animated take on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from Nickelodeon—and a refreshingly diverse new April O’Neil. (via io9)
  • Ever since Thor: Ragnarok, we will do or see anything that Taika Waititi asks of us.
