Wheel of Fortune Benches Longtime Announcer Jim Thornton As Internal Investigation Into Mystery Allegations Begins

Still no answers.

Wheel of Fortune just hit the brakes on one of its most familiar voices. Jim Thornton, the show’s announcer since 2011, has been suspended amid unspecified allegations, and Sony Pictures Television is already moving forward with a replacement while an investigation unfolds. The news broke on September 1, 2026, when the studio confirmed the suspension in a statement. The announcement left fans scrambling for details, especially since the allegations remain shrouded in mystery.

According to US Weekly, Sony’s statement was brief but clear. “We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton,” the company said. “He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.” The lack of specifics has only fueled speculation, but TMZ, which first reported the suspension, provided a potential clue.

The outlet said the allegations stem from an incident on a commercial flight back in May. A passenger reportedly complained to a flight attendant about Thornton, leading to law enforcement being called when the plane landed. Thornton was questioned and released within minutes, with authorities quickly determining no wrongdoing had occurred.

Thornton’s attorney wasted no time pushing back against the narrative

According to E! News, the lawyer made it clear that his client “did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested, and has not been charged with any crime.” The attorney also detailed the brief interaction with law enforcement, emphasizing that the conversation lasted “five minutes or less” before Thornton was told he was free to go.

American Airlines confirmed the incident in its own statement, noting that law enforcement met Flight 1276 upon its arrival at Los Angeles International Airport on May 14 following a customer’s complaint. The airline didn’t provide further details, leaving the nature of the allegations entirely up in the air.

For now, Thornton’s future on Wheel of Fortune hangs in the balance. The show, which has been a staple of American television since 1983, has seen its fair share of changes recently. Just this year, Ryan Seacrest took over as host after Pat Sajak’s emotional farewell in June 2024. Sajak had helmed the show for over four decades and more than 8,000 episodes.

He had signed off with a heartfelt message to viewers

“It’s been an incredible privilege to be invited into millions of homes night after night, year after year, decade after decade,” he said in his final episode. “And I’ve always felt that the privilege came with a responsibility to keep this daily half-hour a safe place for family fun. No social issues, no politics, nothing embarrassing, I hope. Just a game.”

Seacrest, who had big shoes to fill, paid tribute to Sajak in an Instagram post shortly after the transition. “Pat, congratulations on an incredible run with Wheel of Fortune! Your dedication, charm, and wit have made the show a beloved part of American television for decades,” he wrote.

“Your partnership with Vanna has been nothing short of iconic, and together, you’ve created countless wonderful memories for viewers. You’ve set the standard for hosts everywhere, and this marks the end of an era. Best wishes for all your future endeavors!” The show’s other half, Vanna White, remains a constant presence, continuing her role as the letter-turner and fan favorite.

Thornton’s suspension adds a layer of uncertainty to the show’s evolving landscape

He joined Wheel of Fortune in 2011 after the passing of longtime announcer Charlie O’Donnell, who had held the position for 21 years following an initial stint from 1979 to 1980. Before stepping into the announcer booth, Thornton built a career in radio, a background he credits with preparing him for his dream job.

In a 2024 interview with YouTuber Riyaz Datoo, Thornton reflected on his journey, revealing that his passion for broadcasting started young. “When I started, I was 8 years old, and I had a little [mock] radio station in my basement,” he said. “But I wanted to be on TV. I moved to Los Angeles when I was 19 and I kept working and working and working.”

Thornton’s philosophy for success is simple. “Show up to work on time and be enthusiastic – that’s my two rules and you’ll get ahead,” he told Datoo. That enthusiasm has been a hallmark of his time on Wheel of Fortune, where his voice became synonymous with the show’s signature energy. Now, with his suspension, fans are left wondering what comes next. Sony hasn’t named a replacement yet, but the show’s producers are clearly moving quickly to fill the void.
