Spanish soccer player collapses after being struck in the chest against Andorra. He’s stable overnight, but everything changes at 8 a.m.
RIP Jesús de Miguel

During a second-division Spanish soccer match on Monday, November 2, 2026, between Andorra and CD Tenerife, player Jesús de Miguel suffered an on-field collision. The striker collided with Andorra’s goalie Jesús Owono in the final minutes of the Segunda División game while chasing the ball near the halfway line. Owono had come quite far out of goal and crashed into de Miguel at speed, hitting him in the chest with his knee.
De Miguel collapsed after the hit, holding onto his chest before going motionless. Owono, who had received a penalty for his actions, was sent off the field, but when he realized the severity of de Miguel’s injury, he immediately returned. The game was abandoned as 30-year-old Miguel was taken to the hospital where, according to CNN, he was reportedly “stable despite the severity of his condition.” However, that stability didn’t last.
CD Tenerife announces de Miguel’s death
De Miguel had seemingly been on the mend, but overnight, his club posted to X that his “medical condition has worsened neurologically.” Just hours later, CD Tenerife posted again, telling the world that de Miguel had passed away.
The club wrote, “Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., of Jesús de Miguel Alameda. There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness. We stand alongside his devastated family, alongside his loved ones, alongside all of tinerfeñismo that today weeps for this cruel outcome.” NBC Miami reported that de Miguel had suffered cardiac arrest after the strike on the field.
While a torn ligament or even heat exposure isn’t uncommon for soccer players to deal with, the life-threatening injury de Miguel suffered on the field is rare. In 2021, Ukrainian goalkeeper Serhiy Perkhun was involved in a collision during a match while playing for CSKA Moscow that resulted in a fatal head injury. In 2025, a 19-year-old goalkeeper, Raúl Ramírez, also died from head injuries stemming from an in-game collision.
A case of mistaken identity and an open investigation
Spanish media site Cope reported that Spain’s National Police have begun an involuntary manslaughter investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, soccer player for CF Can Vidalet Michel Owono claimed that in the wake of the accident, he has received hateful messages and threats from fans mistaking him for Jesús Owono.
Michel reportedly released a social media statement clarifying he wasn’t involved, offering his condolences to de Miguel’s family, and calling for greater respect and empathy. Jesús Owono, the goalkeeper involved in the on-field collision, allegedly deactivated his Instagram on Tuesday morning.
