Renee Good’s mother admits she’s a Trump voter. Then says she has learned to ‘forgive’ but demands ICE take accountability

On Jan. 7, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) caused nationwide uproar when 37-year-old Renee Good was fatally shot in the head by agent Jonathan Ross during Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Now, eight months after the tragedy that branded her as a “domestic terrorist,” Good’s mother shared testimony in which she called for ICE to take accountability for failing to protect Americans under the Trump administration.
Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, took to the stands on Capitol Hill when the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations held a joint forum on Sept. 22, per CBS News. The forum was spearheaded by Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia and Sen. Richard Blumenthal to discuss the ICE shootings that took the lives of several citizens. Notably, Republican officials were not present despite receiving invitations to join.
In her testimony, Ganger admitted to being a registered Republican and voting for Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential election, and said she initially believed Trump’s immigration policy was to safeguard American citizens. “I’m a registered Republican,” Ganger told the public. “I voted for President Trump under the impression that these agents were here to protect the citizens of the United States. Innocents like our family and the others here, against terrorists.”
Ganger is calling for ICE and Trump administration to be held accountable
Ganger described the shootings as “madness” and condemned ICE for taking away “precious lives” and accusing citizens of being terrorists. “She should still be alive. I will say it again, my daughter should still be alive,” Ganger said. “It is torture that, as her mom and her family, we could not protect Renee. But no one can protect against others who are determined to disregard our country’s constitutional rules and values.”
Ganger also reflected on her Christian values and said she has found it in herself to forgive the transgression, but called for the government and ICE to take accountability for the deadly shootings. “But far more than being a Republican, I am a Christian. Jesus teaches us to forgive, and I have. But what we are asking for is accountability,” the grieving mother said. “We need this never, ever to happen again and destroy another family or a community.”
Good’s brother, Brent Ganger, was also present at the forum and delivered his own testimony, echoing his mother’s plea for ICE to face repercussions for their inhumane acts that tore families apart. “Our family has waited. Our country has waited, and we will not wait any longer. The time is absolutely now for accountability for the deep damage done by ICE and others. We will not be quiet. We will not go away,” he said in front of Congress.
Meanwhile, Good was reportedly a U.S. citizen and was not an intended target for arrest during Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota. Good’s shooter, Ross, didn’t face any real repercussions for her death and was protected by the Trump administration following the intense backlash, per The Independent. Ross was placed on a three-day administrative leave shortly after the shooting before being moved to a different state and reassigned to administrative duty.
