The Ratchet & Clank Movie Trailer Looks Good … But What Is This Movie About?

Recommended Videos

There’s a movie adaptation of the Ratchet & Clank game series in the works, and this trailer for it looks picture-perfect when taken in comparison with the source material; the games’ style lends itself well to this form of animation, given that the games already look like animated movies as it is. The star-studded cast list includes the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Rosario Dawson, but don’t expect to hear much out of them in this trailer. The actor getting the most voice work done here has to be the super-dramatic “in a world…” movie announcer.

Here’s the plot: Ratchet and Clank fight aliens. That’s … about all I gleaned from this trailer, which includes surprisingly little exposition in between its occasional jokes about texting and alien-shooting. We’re all familiar with the “video game curse” when it comes to movies — even the best narrative videogames don’t tend to translate well to the silver screen. And, uh, I have to admit, this trailer looks a lot like a videogame. Except a movie announcer keeps talking.

It sure does look fantastic. What do you all think about the story (or lack thereof)? What type of story do you wish this movie would tell? Is there a way to make an interesting Ratchet & Clank film?
