Watch New Pokémon GO Gameplay Footage Including Character Customization, Pokémon Battling, and More!

Pokémon GO OUTSIDE.

Bringing to life a Pokémon game that uses real-world locations and augmented reality is an enormous undertaking, and luckily for us, that means lots of testing and leaked details. The Pokémon GO mobile game (invite only) beta began days ago in Australia and New Zealand, and now we’ve got over 8 minutes of in-game footage to spoil us on just what we can expect.

In the video above, you can see character customization including gender, hair and eye color, and clothing, though it’s still unknown how much of the planned options are in the beta. It’s certainly possible that the full game will feature even more extensive customization. The footage also includes a demonstration of how gyms work (around 1:30), which involves picking a team and apparently leaving one (or more?) of your Pokémon behind to defend the gym for your team.

Of course, tracking down and catching Pokémon is also shown (2:58), which is done by seeing a Pokémon on the map, walking up to it, and engaging in an encounter by throwing Pokéballs. The trainer in the video catches a Porygon and an Eevee, two first-gen Pokémon that aren’t actually found in the wild in the original games, so seeing them out there roaming around is a fun prospect. Item finding, battling (4:45), egg hatching (6:30), leveling up as a trainer, and the Pokédex (8:00) are also included in the video.

Pokémon GO is scheduled to launch on mobile phones at an unspecified time in 2016.
