Olivia Wilde’s viral ‘Gollum’ interview look had fans convinced she’d found the One Ring but the truth is weirder than Middle-earth

Point of view.

Olivia Wilde just set the record straight on that bizarre Gollum comparison that blew up online after her red carpet interview last month. Fans were convinced she was channeling the popular Lord of the Rings character, but the truth is even weirder – it was all thanks to a fish-eye lens and some questionable camerawork.

According to LADBible, the 42-year-old actor and director took to Instagram Stories over the weekend to address the viral moment, which happened during a chat with the San Francisco Chronicle at the San Francisco International Film Festival on April 24. Social media users had a field day with her distorted appearance, with one person writing, “She looks as if she had found the one ring.”

Another joked, “Pretty soon this will be Olivia Wilde’s next transformation.” Someone even posted a side-by-side pic of Wilde and the iconic Lord of the Rings character, captioning it, “She is definitely holding on to the one ring looking like that.”

Wilde laughed off the comparisons

She admitted that the shot was far from flattering. “Listen, that’s a fish-eye lens. And I admit, is that my best angle? Was that my best-ever look? No. No, it’s startling. It’s a startling image,” she said, cracking up with her brother, Charlie Cockburn, who playfully asked if she was a “resurrected corpse.” She kept it lighthearted, adding, “I don’t know why I was so close to the camera. I didn’t have to be. That’s not the truth,” before deadpanning, “I’m not dead.”

The whole thing is a wild reminder of how easily a weird camera angle can spiral into a full-blown internet meme. Fish-eye lenses are notorious for distorting faces, especially when you’re too close to the glass, and this was a perfect storm of bad framing and viral timing. Wilde’s reaction was the right call owning the absurdity instead of letting it fester.

This is Wilde’s third time wearing the director’s hat

The interview itself was promoting The Invite, Wilde’s third directorial effort after Booksmart (2019) and Don’t Worry Darling (2022). The film, which, according to Entertainment Weekly,  already earned a standing ovation at Sundance in January, is a darkly comedic thriller about a married couple, played by Wilde and Seth Rogen, whose dinner party with their neighbors (Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton) takes a wildly unexpected turn.

Adapted from the 2020 novel The People Upstairs, it’s the kind of project that blends humor and tension in a way only Wilde seems to nail. Wilde’s decision to step in front of the camera alongside Rogen and Norton wasn’t originally part of the plan. In fact, she admitted that she only took the role after her co-stars begged her to join them.

“It was the actors who came to me and asked if I would play the role because we had been workshopping the material together at that point for a while,” she explained. “And we really understood it together, and it felt natural that I would jump in as their scene partner because I knew what we were trying to say and we all, at that point, had just melded into this family.”

The dynamic between the cast was electric

This is especially true for Wilde and Rogen. During the Sundance Q&A, Rogen revealed that Wilde initially resisted starring in the film, but once she committed, the energy on set was undeniable.

“Once she decided to cast herself in this film, which she didn’t seem to want to do, it really took off,” he said. “And I thought that we were able to especially create a dynamic that was, like, so crackling with energy and the rhythms that we had together. It felt so alive.”

Norton, meanwhile, couldn’t stop gushing about Wilde’s ability to direct and act simultaneously. “It’s hard for me to overstate the grace and wisdom with which Olivia gave that performance and directed us,” he said. “She was operating in so many dimensions at the same time, and yet with not a shred of a sense that there was pressure created by any of that juggling act.”

The Invite promises to be a wild ride, blending the kind of sharp humor Wilde excels at with the kind of psychological tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The film hits theaters on June 26.

Wilde’s unexpected Gollum connection might have been the talk of the internet for a hot minute, but it’s clear she’s got bigger things on her plate. Between directing, acting, and now fending off comparisons to fictional creatures, she’s proving she can handle just about anything, even a fish-eye lens gone rogue.
