“Leaked” Nintendo NX Controller Turns Out to Be Elaborate, Well-Crafted Hoax

Recommended Videos

Sorry, gang. It seems that Nintendo NX controller that was making the rounds on the internet earlier this week is nothing but an elaborate, well-crafted prank by two parties who actually didn’t realize that they were pulling the same prank. Responsible for the initial photo, which showed a white controller that had no buttons and two joysticks, is a Redditor named Idriss2Dev. The second photo, which got passed around internet news sites and other outlets, featured a black controller in a “deactivated” state meaning the glossy “touchscreen” that formed the bulk of the controller was dark. The controller for this photo was 3D-printed by Frank Sandqvist, co-founder of CNC Design in Finland.

Like I said, the best part about this story is that neither of them knew the other one had created a similar controller. The designs each of them used were based on some patents Nintendo filed back in 2015. Above, you’ll see that Sandqvist went to some pretty elaborate lengths to create his controller, mocking it all up in Fusion 360, a 3D modeling tool developed my Autodesk. There are a bunch of little details he added that helped add up to a very convincing hoax–a “Property of Nintendo” sticker, things like that.

If the pictures aren’t enough for you, Tim Aza posted a very nice vine that showed a clip of how this particular NX design may have ended up working if, you know, it were real. Which it’s not. Check it out:
