Minnesota men accused of ‘violating women’ as they allegedly record a Pilates class from outside without consent
The reason for it is unbelievable.
Women are often urged to stay vigilant, as even spaces meant for their comfort can be invaded without consent. That was the case for one Pilates studio in Minnesota, whose female guests caught several men lurking outside the studio and allegedly recording them inside, prompting the women to barricade the windows.
“Cannot believe this happened today during our Pilates class,” Lellian (@lifewithlellian) wrote in the on-screen text in her video, which has since gained over 5.1 million views on TikTok. According to Lellian, she was attending a Pilates class in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, when she and other participants noticed several men outside the studio with phones on stands, microphones, and 360 cameras, allegedly recording them from different angles.
Lellian said their Pilates instructor confronted the men and told them they weren’t allowed to film while on private property. Nevertheless, this did not seem to deter the men, who supposedly continued recording the women from a distance outside the studio.
This is allegedly not the Minnesota men’s first time
In the video, the women can be seen stacking Pilates boxes to create a barricade by the windows, hoping to block the men from recording inside. However, one of the three men used his stand to raise his phone and recorded through a gap at the top of the barricade.
“When we started recording them back, the one closest to the door hid around the corner (while still recording),” Lellian said. “This is so gross.” While one man seemingly tried to record from near the windows, Lellian also noted the two men who stayed by the grass, keeping their cameras pointed at the studio.
“These two were really out here thinking it’s a flex to record + violate women,” Lellian said. One of the men can be seen making hand gestures to the women, which Lellian described as something akin to saying, “What up, gang?” The other man can be seen pointing at the sky, while nodding and smiling, as if to say, “On God.”
“This is not okay. This is extremely inappropriate,” one of the women can be heard saying. “No means ‘no,’” Lellian added.
According to Lellian, they called the police and made a report. However, she claimed the men left before officers arrived. It appeared that this was not the first incident of women being filmed without consent in this manner. Officers told the Pilates class they had received other reports of similar behavior, with the men targeting women-only Pilates studios, per Lellian.
The men are likely conducting a ‘First Amendment audit’
Viewers were left shocked by such a blatant display of men allegedly recording women without their consent and seemingly proud of it. “This is legal harassment idc what anybody says,” one viewer wrote. A second viewer wrote, “We are in a loser apocalypse.” Some recommended that the studio take additional measures to enhance privacy, saying, “Time for privacy windows!! Where you can see out but can’t see in.”
Others provided a possible explanation as to why the men were recording without care for consequences. “They do it bc technically they are allowed to and they use your reactions for YouTube engagement. It’s best to ignore so they have no content,” a viewer said. Another added, “Just because it’s legal doesn’t make it not creepy.”
According to the New Hampshire Municipal Association (NHMA), the Minnesota men’s actions are referred to as a “First Amendment audit,” and those who perform them are known as “auditors.” First Amendment audits are reportedly a political and social movement in the U.S., where auditors “exercise” their First Amendment rights by recording in public spaces and provoking reactions from their intended targets.
In recent years, First Amendment audits have become a content-making activity for auditors, who usually post the interactions on sites like YouTube. The more negative reaction they provoke from unsuspecting targets, the more views and money they earn. No matter how morally wrong their actions may seem, such as filming women without their consent, the First Amendment protects the auditors from facing any real repercussions unless they film on private property or are unreasonably disruptive.
