Planet Fitness is in hot water thanks to the alleged actions of a male gym-goer. A handful of women have filed a lawsuit against the fitness center operator after accusing one man of repeatedly breaking into the locked tanning rooms and filming the female patrons while they were naked.

The allegations are focused on a Planet Fitness in Arroyo Grande, California, where 40-year-old Kyle Combs was accused of taking over 50 photos of approximately 47 women in states of undress, reports the New York Post. There were also apparently recordings of him masturbating. According to the court papers, the incidents occurred between January and December 2025.

Combs is facing 12 misdemeanour counts of invasion of privacy for allegedly making the secret recordings of the naked women. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Eight of his supposed victims are suing as “Jane Does,” and they allege that Combs recorded himself masturbating while filming and watching them in the nude without their knowledge or consent

Planet Fitness staff allegedly ignored warnings

The suit from the eight Jane Does also alleges that Planet Fitness staff ignored warnings and complaints from the women for months. One of the women claimed that she caught Combs in the tanning area in May 2025, but when she tried to tell an employee about the incident, she claims they laughed at her and blamed her for not locking the door.

The woman insisted she had locked the door but, according to the suit, was dismissed by the employee once again, as they claimed there was nothing wrong with the locks.

Combs’ alleged behavior continued for months. He was only brought to a stop on December 29, when a different woman, labeled as Jane Doe 1, caught him pointing a phone camera through a crack in the tanning booth she was in.

Jane Doe 1 had stripped to a bikini before noticing Combs. Upon seeing him, she screamed, prompting Combs to run from the scene. One employee allegedly saw Combs run but did not intervene. Jane Doe 1 subsequently called the police, and the following police investigation found a great deal of evidence on the man’s phone.

Flimsy locks

Despite the Planet Fitness employee initially denying that the locks were faulty, the suit claims that the tanning room and red-light room locks were easily exploited by simply inserting a coin or flat object into a slot and turning it.

The suit raises questions as to how Kyle Combs was able to slip by undetected for almost a year without staff realizing what was happening. The fitness center claims to have zero tolerance for harassment, and yet women who frequented the gym claimed that employees were frequently distracted, either talking or on their phones rather than monitoring what members were doing.

In a statement to the Post, a Planet Fitness spokesperson said, “The safety and privacy of our members is our top priority, and we do not tolerate inappropriate behavior of any kind.” Following the accusations against Combs going public, the franchise acted, as they apparently “cancelled the member in question and worked closely with the local police in their investigation.”
