Mom says her toddler started choking after McDonald’s gave her spicy McNuggets instead of the regular ones: “She’s not even 2 years old”

That is one Happy Meal mix-up no parent wants to discover after their toddler has already taken a bite.

A late-night McDonald’s stop turned scary for one Ohio mom after she claims her toddler was handed spicy Chicken McNuggets instead of the regular ones she ordered. She did not realize anything was wrong until her daughter, who is not even 2 years old, was already eating them.

Shai Shai said she visited a McDonald’s in Russells Point, Ohio, around 10 p.m. on Sept. 21. She ordered two Happy Meals, including a four-piece regular Chicken McNuggets meal for her youngest daughter.

Shai said it was dark in the car, and the nuggets looked normal. She had never tried McDonald’s spicy nuggets and had no reason to expect them in her daughter’s meal.

In a response to TMS after publication, Shai said her daughter began choking while eating, prompting the family to pull over. They initially thought she had choked on a larger piece and headed home.

There, Shai said they broke the nuggets into smaller pieces and let her daughter continue eating. When the child began gagging and vomited, Shai tasted a nugget and realized it was spicy.

Shai said her daughter did not receive medical attention but remained unwell until around 1 a.m. TMS has not independently verified the cause of her reported symptoms.

McDonald’s reportedly offered two Happy Meal coupons

Shai said she contacted the restaurant’s manager through Messenger. According to her, the manager asked when the family had visited so the employee could be addressed and offered coupons for two Happy Meals.

Replacement food was not her main concern. Shai said she wanted to understand how the mix-up happened and what McDonald’s would do to prevent the same mistake.

Shai told TMS that the manager stopped responding, including to a follow-up message. She then contacted corporate customer service to document the incident.

According to Shai, the email she received apologized for a missing sweet tea she had also mentioned and promised further contact. She replied asking the company to read the full complaint and address her daughter’s food. When she spoke with TMS, she was still awaiting that follow-up.

The backlash became a second fight entirely

Some commenters questioned whether Shai was making too much of the incident. One accused her of acting as though someone had deliberately tried to harm her daughter.

Shai told TMS that an earlier disagreement with an employee concerned the missing sweet tea. She said the worker disputed that the family had ordered it and ultimately provided another Coke.

Shai had previously acknowledged she could not prove anyone intentionally switched the nuggets. She nevertheless said receiving the wrong food after that exchange concerned her.

In a follow-up Facebook post, she rejected suggestions that she wanted a payout. “I never said I was suing McDonald’s, nor am I planning to sue them,” she wrote.

Shai said she wanted the restaurant to address the mistake. She told TMS that she shared her experience to encourage other parents to check their children’s orders.

The Mary Sue reached out to Shai and McDonald’s before publication. Shai responded after publication, and her comments have been incorporated into this article. McDonald’s has not responded to The Mary Sue’s request for comment as of this update.

Update, Oct. 5, 2026: This article has been updated with Shai’s responses about her daughter’s symptoms, the restaurant interaction, and the corporate response she says she received. The timeline has also been clarified to reflect her statement that she identified the spicy nuggets after returning home.
