Matt Damon Is Pulling Out All the Stops for His First Date in Over Two Decades, All to Save a Forgotten Shelter Dog

Push for pet adoption.

Matt Damon just went all out for his first date in over 20 years, and it wasn’t with a human. The actor spent California’s Adopt-A-Pet Day wooing Betsy, a shelter dog who’s been waiting for a home for a year and a half. In an Instagram video posted on June 5, 2026, Damon showed up at Eastwood Ranch in Agoura Hills, California, with a plush bouquet, a red bandana, and a whole lot of charm to give this forgotten pup a dream date.

Damon kicked off the visit by giving viewers a tour of the rescue, introducing them to some of the other dogs hoping for adoption. According to Us Weekly, there was JoJo, a 6-month-old puppy who couldn’t resist grabbing a toy the second she hit the play area. Then there was Piper, a 4-year-old dog who’s blind and partially deaf but still full of love.

Damon didn’t hold back his admiration for the ranch. “The work they do here is amazing,” he said. “Here, they rescue dogs from kill shelters. So this is kind of their last hope.” That last line hits hard. For dogs like Betsy, places like Eastwood Ranch aren’t just a pit stop – they’re the difference between life and death.

Matt was the best date for Betsy

When Damon finally met Betsy, the pitbull who’s been at the ranch the longest, he handed her the plush bouquet and asked, “Can I interest you in the flowers, Betsy?” Then he tied a red bandana around her neck to make sure she looked her best. “I’m gonna show you off for a little bit,” he told her. The two settled in for some quality time, and Damon didn’t hide his affection.

“I’m told she’s really cuddly,” he said petting her, and Betsy’s content smile made it obvious she was loving it. “That smile, I love that smile dogs get when they’re happy and they’re just content,” Damon added. But he wasn’t just there to cuddle. He put together a basket of toys for Betsy. “Whatever toys she doesn’t destroy are going in the bag along with the toys we already have in here to go home with Betsy with whoever comes to rescue her and adopt her,” he said.

Then Damon dropped the bombshell: this was his first date in 23 years. He’s been married to Luciana Damon since 2005, and the couple has four daughters together. “So Betsy was my date today,” he said. “For one reason, it’s the first date my wife has allowed me to go on in 23 years. But the other, the real reason was that Betsy’s been here the longest.”

The joke about his wife’s permission is classic Damon, but the real heart of the message is clear. Betsy has been waiting for a home for a year and a half, and while Eastwood Ranch is a great place, it’s not where she belongs long-term. “What she needs is a family to take her in,” Damon said.

Damon’s visit wasn’t just about Betsy, though

It was a chance to shine a light on the work that Eastwood Ranch does every day. Founded by Alison Eastwood, the nonprofit specializes in rescuing dogs and cats from overcrowded, high-kill shelters. These are animals that, without intervention, would likely be euthanized due to lack of space or resources. The ranch gives them a second chance, but the ultimate goal is to find them permanent homes.

That’s where Adopt-A-Pet Day comes in. The California-wide initiative, backed by the ASPCA, encourages people to adopt shelter animals, and on June 6, adoption fees were waived at participating shelters across the state. Pitbulls like Betsy often face an uphill battle when it comes to adoption. Despite being loving, loyal, and great with people, they’re frequently overlooked due to stereotypes and misconceptions.

Alison Eastwood addressed this during Damon’s visit, explaining that Betsy is “great with people” and children but tends to be shy around other dogs. That’s not a dealbreaker but a personality trait, like any other dog. But for some reason, pitbulls are often judged more harshly than other breeds. Damon’s date with Betsy was a chance to show the world that these dogs are just as deserving of love and a forever home as any other.

Damon is no stranger to pets

He and Luciana have five animals at home, and according to Damon, his wife is the one who usually brings them home. “It’s not even a conversation at this point; she just comes home with them,” he joked. It’s a dynamic that plenty of pet owners will recognize. One person in the household is always the softie who can’t resist a furry face, and the other just has to go along with it.

There’s something about seeing a celebrity like Damon, who could spend his time doing anything, choosing to use his platform to highlight shelter animals. He played with the dogs, learned their stories, and made it clear that these animals deserve homes.

Betsy isn’t the only dog at Eastwood Ranch waiting for a home. There’s Jojo, the playful puppy, Piper, the sweet blind and deaf dog, and Duke, a Doberman who loves toys. Each of them has a story, and each of them is hoping for the same thing: a family to call their own. Damon’s visit is a reminder that adopting a pet isn’t just about saving an animal; it’s about gaining a loyal, loving companion.
