Marvel’s X-Men reboot may have found its Mystique in Hunter Schafer, and fans are connecting the dots thanks to one tiny height detail

Hunter Schafer has said the fan-casting is “really cool,” but the studio has yet to confirm a thing

Hunter Schafer’s Mystique casting talk returns thanks to a 5'10" insider tip

The X-Men rumor mill is spinning again, and this time it has a very familiar face attached. According to ComicBook.com, industry scooper James Mack has claimed that Euphoria star Hunter Schafer has been in serious talks with Marvel Studios to play the shapeshifting mutant Mystique in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot of X-Men.

Mack shared the rumor on X, noting that while no official deal has been signed, the conversations have reportedly been substantial. For fans who have spent years waiting for the MCU to bring mutants into the fold, it’s the kind of tease that sends the internet into a frenzy within minutes.

Of course, this is all still firmly in rumor territory. Marvel Studios has not confirmed any casting, and the claim remains an unverified industry whisper. If you’ve been online during any previous round of superhero casting speculation, you know the drill: take it with a healthy grain of salt and maybe a snack.

Why fans are already convinced

Part of what’s fueling the excitement is a very specific detail. Mack wrote that Mystique “will be 5’10 tall in the MCU,” a height that happens to match Schafer’s own. It’s a small breadcrumb, but fandom has built entire theories on less, and plenty of X-Men fans are treating it as a sign the casting is closer to reality than a typical rumor.

There’s also the question of fit. Schafer, who also appeared in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, has built a reputation for magnetic, offbeat screen presence. Mystique, a character defined by fluid identity, secrecy, and razor-sharp intelligence, is a role that rewards exactly that kind of performer. It’s easy to see why fans are already imagining her in the blue-scaled spotlight.

What a new Mystique could mean

Mystique has long been one of the most compelling figures in the X-Men canon, a character whose ability to become anyone has always made her more than a simple villain. Past screen versions have leaned into different sides of her, from cold operative to conflicted antihero, and a fresh MCU take could dig into the complexity that comics readers have loved for decades.

The reboot itself is still taking shape, so there’s plenty of time for details to shift, confirm, or fall apart entirely. Until Marvel says otherwise, Schafer’s name is just one very intriguing possibility on a growing list of fan-favorite mutants. But if this rumor does turn out to be true, the MCU’s mutant era might be off to a very strong start.
