Peggy Carter as Captain Carter in Marvel's What If...?

Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ Season 3 Confirmed at SDCC 2022

Marvel’s What If…? has received an early renewal from Disney for a third season. What If…? is an animated Marvel series that premiered on Disney+ in August of 2021. Besides Loki, What If…? is one of the few Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) TV series to run for more than one season. The show follows the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), a member of the alien Watcher race, who observes the happenings of the multiverse. While he can observe it, he is unable to interfere with the storylines he sees play out.

Each episode of What If…? explores various alternate timelines taking place throughout the multiverse. It explores a timeline in which Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is Captain America, one in which T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) became Star Lord, and another in which the Marvel universe experiences a zombie apocalypse. The series is fun, speculative, and boasts top-notch animation and voice performances. However, not every MCU actor was able to return to voice their respective characters, leading to some interesting recasting.

What If…? was quickly renewed for a second season, with development of it having begun as early as 2019. The second season, like the first, will also consist of 9 episodes and is expected to release in early 2023. What If…? even spurned a spin-off animated series, Marvel Zombies. The spin-off is a continuation of the universe seen in What If…? episode 5 and sees a new generation of heroes saving a universe that has been overtaken by zombies. With season 2 on the way and a spin-off show in the works, What If…?‘s future is looking good.

What If…? season 3 is confirmed

As part of the San Diego Comic Con, Marvel officially confirmed that What If…? season 3 is happening. While it’s a bit early, it is in line with season 2’s early renewal. The news came alongside What If…? season 2’s trailer and a first look at Marvel Zombies, as well as confirmation that the latter will be the MCU’s first TV-MA rated show. Additionally, the animated series, Spider-Man: Freshman Year, also got some promising updates, with Charlie Cox confirmed to be reprising his role as Daredevil for the series. The show will explore how Peter Parker became the Spider-Man we know from the MCU.

With What If…? season 3 confirmed and Spider-Man: Freshman Year and Marvel Zombies forthcoming, the MCU is creating a firm foundation in the animation department. So far, we know that What If…? season 2 will follow the assembling of the Guardians of the Multiverse. Now, we can anticipate the Watcher will see many more universes and heroes in the upcoming third season, as well.
