"That's my secret, Cap. I'm always spoiling."

**WARNING: MAJOR INFINITY WAR SPOILERS BELOW**

Marvel and Disney are notoriously secretive with pretty much every element of every movie ahead of its release. In interviews leading up to Infinity War, multiple castmembers said that they never received the full script, and that the first time they would know everything that happens in the film would be at its premiere. You can often sense an actor’s nervousness, especially if they’re new to a franchise like The Avengers or Star Wars, as if they’re terrified to say something they’re not supposed to.

And then there’s Mark Ruffalo, who just blurted out the ending of Avengers: Infinity War during an interview with Good Morning America all the way back in July of last year.

In case the headline and the big bold warning at the top of the article weren’t enough of an indication, do not watch or read any further if you don’t want to know the ending of Infinity War. Also, go back in time 10 months and scrub this clip from your brain.

Talking about the end of Thor: Ragnarok, Ruffalo says that “Like every other Marvel movie, it doesn’t end well for the superheroes.” You can tell that Don Cheadle already thinks he’s said too much. But then he says “Wait until you see this next one. Everybody dies.”

He’s actually said this as a joke before, in interviews leading up to Age of Ultron. But his reaction to his own words was markedly different.

Plus, Cheadle seems entirely sincere when he yells at Ruffalo and tries to get him to move on. (I also missed that right when the video cuts out, Ruffalo is mumbling into his hands, “I just get impulsive sometimes.”)

But at the time, we weren’t sure what to make of that. Was it a publicity stunt? Was Ruffalo revealing too much? Even if he was, we didn’t think he could really mean everybody. Although, he sort of stutters before “everybody” in a hard-H sort of way that makes me think he was about to say “half” and then cut himself off. Because that spoiler would, in the end, have been way more specific. Maybe he thought that be saying “everybody,” we would think it’s hyperbole, and it just means a lot, like maybe 3, important characters would die.

In fact, that’s exactly what our own Kaila Hale-Stern wrote at the time in her article, “Is Mark Ruffalo Messing With Us or Did He Just Reveal the Most Massive Avengers: Infinity War Spoiler?”

Barring that this was some kind of publicity stunt, what does this mean for Infinity War? I’m tempted to err against the stunt angle because Cheadle looks legitimately panicked and Ruffalo regretful after he speaks. So, if “everybody dies” in Infinity Wars, whaaaaat. OK, first of all, this was likely some hyperbole in action. Probably several well-known characters die, but not “everybody.”

She also wrote that “On the other hand, of all of the Marvel stable, Ruffalo has the most unassuming indie-I-don’t-give-a-fuck vibe and it’s possible he just innocently revealed a crazy big spoiler for the upcoming Avengers two-part galaxy-spanning epic.”

We had no idea.
