These Reactions From the SXSW Premiere of Jordan Peele’s Us Have Us Dying to See the Film
Jordan Peele’s highly anticipated follow-up to Get Out, Us, premiered last night at SXSW in Austin, TX. After his culture-shifting debut film, which won him an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, fans were eager to see Peele’s sophomore effort. After all, how do you follow a massive success like Get Out?
Well, fans need not worry, because according to the Twitter reactions after the premiere, Us has the makings of a brand new classic. The film, written and directed by Peele, stars Winston Duke and Lupita Nyong’o (both of whom starred in Black Panther) as a married couple going on vacation with their kids. The trip soon takes a chilling turn as they are confronted and terrorized by their doppelgangers.
Once the film, ended the audience took to Twitter to share their reactions, and let’s just say, this film looks amazing:
I have not, I repeat, have not been able to get #USMovie off my mind. So many themes, so many angles, So much to process…
I don’t trust any of the reviews coming out bc its not a film you can process in a few hours. No way. pic.twitter.com/ptjcGw3vEr

I will not for a minute claim any real understanding of what I just watched but it was comfortably a top ten lifetime movie going experience. #USmovie

Jordan Peele's "Us" is a horror masterpiece. We are witnessing the birth of our modern day Hitchcock. 20 years from now we will ask one another what our favorite Peele film is & you will get 10/12 different answers. Incredible performance from Lupita Nyong'o! #UsMovie #UsFirst pic.twitter.com/vvHunYqSxd

#UsMovie is a heck of an experience. Funny enough to make you laugh, scary enough to make you scream, genuinely heartbreaking in moments, anchored by several incredible dual performances, especially Lupita’s. #SXSW

My review for #UsMovie. Lupita is about to win another Oscar but this time as lead actress. She should actually win 2.

#UsMovie just cemented Jordan Peele as the greatest horror mastermind of the decade. A terrifying, funny, smart, thoughtful movie with a phenomenal cast. Between this and Little Monsters we are living in the year of Lupita Nyong’o!

#UsMovie is… different. And everything I wanted out of @JordanPeele’s sophomoric effort. The mystery of it allows for multiple watches. Less political and “important” as Get Out. More interesting, gripping, and daring. Better balance of the sick and the hilarious. Awesome job. pic.twitter.com/ItIqH77Klc

#SXSW: @JordanPeele’s #USmovie frays your nerves with exacting precision, ambitious original ideas, and moments that will traumatize (in… the best way, as great genre films do?) a whole generation of youngs who sneak in to see it. ✂️ Also: Lupita. Is. INCREDIBLE. pic.twitter.com/bdM5EwI0bW

Oh, @JordanPeele. You sick, twisted, brilliant SOB. Don’t ever stop making us think.

#UsMovie is a house of horrors. More terrifying, but as fun as GET OUT. And what it says about our divided country also shows that @JordanPeele is a new master of suspense. The enemy is — and maybe always has been — us.
I’ll never listen to “Good Vibrations” the same way again. pic.twitter.com/WV7vUzmYOr

Winston plays cornball Black dad perfectly. To PERFECTION. Mans often was the source of comic relief even during the films most terrifying moments and he is GENUINELY FUNNY.

Jordan Peeke has crafted a thrilling film that seals him as a master of horror. #UsMovie is an entertaining insight into humanity and who we are. LUPITA. WOW. Lupita is everything. Review soon!

In 30 years we will talk about @JordanPeele the same way we now talk about Craven, Carpenter, Barker, Chabrol, Argento, Spike, and yeah, Hitchcock. But also Wilder, PTA, Polanski, Cassavetes, and Kubrick.
He's top-shelf, Mt. Rushmore, art-form-shifting, holy-fuck good.#UsMovie

Janelle Monae sums it up perfectly:
