Jill Biden’s New Memoir Drops a Bombshell About the Debate Night That Forced Joe to Quit the Race

The turning point.

Jill Biden’s new memoir drops a bombshell about the debate night that forced Joe Biden to quit the 2024 presidential race. In her upcoming book View from the East Wing, the former first lady reveals she thought her husband was having a stroke during his disastrous debate performance. The book, set to release on June 2, includes raw, behind-the-scenes details about that pivotal night and its aftermath.

In an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning, Jill Biden described watching the debate as one of the most frightening moments of her life. “I wasn’t horrified, I was frightened, because I had never ever seen Joe like that before or since, never,” she told Rita Braver. She added, “I don’t know what happened. I mean, when I, as I watched it, I thought, ‘Oh my God, he’s having a stroke,’ and it scared me to death.” The full interview is scheduled to air on May 31.

The debate, held in June 2024, was a turning point in the election. Joe Biden’s halting, uneven performance sparked immediate backlash from within his own party, with many Democrats calling for him to step aside. About three weeks later, he ended his reelection campaign and endorsed then Vice President Kamala Harris, according to ABC News

At the time, both Bidens tried to downplay the debate’s impact

The day after the event, Joe addressed supporters at a rally, acknowledging his struggles but insisting he was still up to the job. “Folks, I don’t walk as easy as I used to. I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to, but I know how to tell the truth,” he said. The former president then added, “I know right from wrong, and I know how to do this job.”

Jill Biden also tried to reassure donors at a fundraiser in New York City’s Greenwich Village. “So, let’s talk about last night’s debate, because I know it’s on your minds,” she reportedly said. “As Joe said earlier today, he’s not a young man. And you know, after last night’s debate, he said, ‘You know, Jill, I don’t know what happened. I didn’t feel that great.’ And I said, ‘Look, Joe, we are not going to let 90 minutes define the four years that you’ve been president.'”

A week later, Joe said his poor performance wasn’t due to any serious health issues. “No indication of any serious condition. I was exhausted. I didn’t listen to my instincts in terms of preparing and it was a bad night,” he said.

Jill’s memoir paints a far more personal and emotional picture of that night

According to excerpts published by The Atlantic, Joe turned to her as they left the debate stage and whispered, “I really f—ed up, didn’t I?” She replied, “Yes, you did.” The moment captures the raw, unfiltered reality behind the public facade. While Jill told supporters immediately after the debate that Joe had “answered every question” and “knew all the facts,” her private reaction was one of deep concern.

In the book, she writes that she still doesn’t understand what happened that night. “Nothing explained what I was seeing,” she says. “To this day, I still don’t know what happened. Why wasn’t he making any sense? It was inexplicable to me.”

The memoir also reveals how Jill grappled with the decision to continue campaigning after the debate. PEOPLE reports that in a conversation three days later, she insisted the 90-minute performance shouldn’t overshadow Joe’s four years in office. “We will continue to fight,” she said at the time. But privately, she was clearly shaken.

Biden’s debate performance wasn’t just a political setback, it was a moment that forced a reckoning within the Democratic Party. His decision to drop out marked the end of a months-long effort to convince voters he was still the best candidate to take on Donald Trump. The debate itself was a stark contrast to his usual style. Where he had once been known for his sharp wit and folksy charm, that night he seemed lost, stumbling over words and struggling to articulate his thoughts.
