New Zealand loves their Tolkien. Working with the crew behind The Hobbit, the New Zealand Post has created a line of official stamps and coins to commemorate the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. They’ve even gotten a stamp of approval (ba-doom-tish) from Sir Ian McKellen, who says that “To put Gandalf on these splendiferous coins is a wizard idea”, adding that “The pointy hat, the beard and the illuminated staff – the $1.90 NZ stamp is pure Gandalf.”

The best part? The coins are legal tender, so if you’re in New Zealand you can actually walk into a store and pay for something (copy of The Hobbit, perhaps?) using coins with Martin Freeman‘s face on them. And it even kind of looks like him! A wizard idea, indeed.
