Unbearably awkward.
Margot Lee (@margot.lee) agreed to go on a date with a guy she matched with on Hinge. After her experience, he became her “last date” from the app.
“I’m usually not a dinner-for-the-first-date type of person. I would never pick that if it were up to me,” Lee told TikTok. But she got the sense that he didn’t drink, so she agreed to go to dinner with him. When she told her cousin in the hospitality industry about the location proposed to her, Lee was warned not to go. But Lee went anyway, choosing to be easygoing with the man.
Lee texted him that she would be five minutes late. He texted her the same, and they went to the restaurant together. But as they were going in, Lee alleged that he started looking at her from head to toe.
“He’s not like, nice outfit. He just kind of, like, stares at my outfit,” Lee alleged. When they sat, Lee said she started talking about what she did for work. She owns a stationery business and has even worked with Pamela Anderson.
Starting on the wrong foot
“I say what I do for work—I say that I do social media. His response to all of that is, ‘Oh, I don’t have Instagram.’ Which also wasn’t true,” Lee alleged. She claimed that later that night, she found him on Instagram. Lee admitted that his dismissal made her feel small, but they continued their date.
When the waitress came over, Lee ordered a glass of wine. Notably, she claimed her date ordered everything the waitress didn’t recommend. The man also allegedly did not consult her about the food.
“The one thing I say is that I don’t want anchovies,” Lee said. But immediately, she claimed the man told her he was in a “fish” mood. The waitress suggested that they order an entree, but the man claimed he wasn’t hungry. “You invited me to dinner. Do you care to even ask me if I wanna eat?” Lee expressed on TikTok. Nevertheless, she told the waitress that she wanted to add a tomato dish.
After the ordering fiasco, her date allegedly excused himself to send something from his phone. Lee said he went and spent “at least five minutes” on his phone. She began looking awkwardly around the restaurant, then began looking at him in disbelief. Lee alleged he later got distracted by his phone in the middle of their date yet again.

“Okay, so he’s a horrible conversationalist. He’s seven years older than me. He has, like, a really interesting job,” Lee claimed. She said he also owned a business, and she hoped they would connect through that similarity and make conversation out of it. However, he did bring up his travels. Then, Lee said he had been to the Burning Man festival six times. When she told him she’d never met anyone who’d been to the festival before and asked what it was like, the man allegedly closed the conversation off.
“Oh, there’s an HBO documentary about it. You should just watch it,” the man allegedly suggested. Lee was frustrated since her date allegedly had little interest in making conversation. To make matters worse, Lee alleged he didn’t ask much about her.
“He’s obviously not asking any questions about myself. He asked me about where I grew up, where I go to school,” Lee clarified. However, she said he “made generalizations” about these places instead of trying to learn more about them through her.
When the food arrived, Lee said her date didn’t eat much. He later told Lee that he had already eaten at 4 p.m., much to her dismay. While they didn’t order much, the man allegedly exaggerated that the food on the table was “probably 3,000 calories.” Lee asked him to finish the food, thinking most of it would go to waste. But he allegedly only picked up a piece of salad for one more bite.
“Dude, you made the dinner reservation! I didn’t even wanna do dinner,” Lee lamented. Unlike this woman who walked away from a bad date with her “trauma tax” in hand, Lee finished dinner with her awkward Hinge date. To top the date off, Lee alleged he didn’t even leave a tip for their waitress.
“I’m deleting the apps,” she said, recalling the horrendous experience. But Lee wasn’t the only one who thought her date went wrong. One person claimed to be at a nearby table. She commented that she and her boyfriend “felt so bad” for Lee, given how awkward the situation seemed.
