Jimmy John’s customer eats her sub in a dark room. Then she turns on her flashlight and finds what seems to be medical gauze in with her lettuce
Hold the lettuce, please.

starts eating
Catelyn Wiseman (@catelynwiseman) took to TikTok after buying a sub from Jimmy John’s and finding that her food came with a sprinkling of what allegedly appeared to be medical gauze mixed into the lettuce. She realized something was wrong when she found a strange texture in her sandwich, as she was in a dark room at the time and didn’t see anything amiss. Then, she used her flashlight to investigate and discovered that her sandwich had an extra ingredient added to it. The TikTok video has gained over half a million views and is pinned to Wiseman’s profile, making it easy to find.
It’s not confirmed that the mystery substance in Wiseman’s lettuce was gauze or something else, and her video called out the sandwich chain, asking what she got in her lettuce as she and somebody apparently named Jacob investigate the lettuce to find that there’s not just a single piece of a cloth-like object mixed with it.
Commenters offered Wiseman their guesses about the apparent gauze
Some former food service employees came into the comments with their suggestions as to what the cloth in Wiseman’s lettuce is likely to be, and how it might’ve ended up there to begin with. The top comment is that it’s a disposable washcloth that got mixed in with the lettuce when it was being shredded.
An account claiming to be a former manager replied to the disposable washcloth post, agreeing that this was the most likely explanation and that the employees probably didn’t realize a cloth was stuck in the slicer and also being sliced. However, they believe that the employees realized it afterward and were too stressed to deal with redoing the lettuce, which seems like a good way to get a sandwich thrown at you, like in this cheesesteak case.
Consumers are increasingly wary of eating out
Unfortunately, TikTok is filled with people who found something in their food that isn’t meant to be there. Most of those videos end up with comments similar to Wiseman’s video, as people say that they avoid eating out due to the frequent recalls and issues that other consumers post about on social media. One commenter even asked who’s still getting lettuce on their sandwiches, referencing the cyclosporiasis outbreak that drove recalls of lettuce.
Wiseman isn’t alone in finding something that isn’t food mixed in with her food, and comments seem to suggest that fast food no longer cares about quality, with one reading, “Fast food restaurants have turned into front line health destroyers for big pharma.” Meanwhile, another commenter sums up the overall vibes of the cloth situation by saying, “Welp, that’s me and lettuce done for the foreseeable future.”
