Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 15 more years in prison in Manhattan case

Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a felony sex crime in a Manhattan courtroom. This ruling marks the latest chapter in a long legal journey that saw the emergence of the #MeToo movement and spanned more than six years. According to Al Jazeera, the 74-year-old former producer was sentenced on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, following his conviction in a retrial last year.
This specific case involved the sexual assault of Miriam Haley, a former production assistant who worked on the reality show Project Runway. The courtroom proceedings on Wednesday served as a stark reminder of how far the once-powerful mogul has fallen. Weinstein appeared in a wheelchair and was moved out of the room quickly after the judge delivered the sentence.
While he remains behind bars, he continues to maintain his innocence regarding the assault. He is now expected to remain incarcerated well into his 80s. His representatives have already indicated that he plans to challenge both the conviction and the sentence through the appellate process.
Miriam Haley delivered a powerful victim impact statement during the hearing
Haley, now 49, described the last seven years as a period of intense public humiliation and smear campaigns. She alleged that these campaigns were orchestrated by Weinstein and his legal team to damage her reputation. Haley told the court that her experience after the assault had already been a life sentence for her. She implored the judge to consider the lasting damage caused by these actions.
According to ABC News, Judge Curtis Farber did not hold back when addressing the defendant during the sentencing. He told Weinstein that he never truly accepted responsibility for his actions. The judge noted that Weinstein had the potential for greatness, but he threw it all away by assaulting Haley.
Judge Farber also labeled Weinstein a sexual predator and described him as the literal face of the #MeToo movement. He remarked that Weinstein’s past Hollywood achievements would pale in comparison to the harm he caused.
Weinstein spoke briefly before the judge handed down the sentence
The disgraced media mogul told the court that he is not a perfect person and expressed that he lives with many regrets. He also stated that he sincerely apologizes for his actions. However, he also complained about his treatment while in custody. He claimed that he is treated like an animal, or less, while in the prison system. He suggested that he would focus his remaining years on advocating for changes within that system.
The legal path to this sentencing was complex and filled with twists. Weinstein was first arrested in 2018 after public accusations surfaced in 2017. His original 2020 conviction resulted in a 23-year prison sentence. That conviction was overturned by New York’s highest court in 2024. The court ruled that the inclusion of extraneous, non-indicted testimony had compromised the fairness of the trial. A subsequent retrial attempt last June ended in a split verdict after a jury room feud.
The defense attorney, Marc Agnifilo, argued that the court should consider that Weinstein has only been convicted of attacking two women. He told the judge that it is not dozens, but two. Another representative for Weinstein, Juda S. Engelmayer, released a statement following the hearing.
He argued that there is an extraordinary disparity between this sentence and other sentences for the same offense in New York. He claimed that this includes cases involving conduct the defense argued was more aggravated.
Despite the arguments from his legal team, the reality of Weinstein’s future remains bleak
Sources familiar with his situation suggest that Weinstein has become resigned to dying behind bars. His physical health has reportedly deteriorated significantly during his time in custody. He is currently dealing with serious issues including chronic myeloid leukemia, diabetes, congestive heart failure, and kidney problems. His attorney, Jacob Kaplan, noted that Weinstein has been hospitalized six times since 2025.
Weinstein has spent years using a wheelchair to navigate. He underwent emergency surgery in 2024 to remove fluid from around his heart and lungs. He was also hospitalized during the summer for heart and breathing issues at Bellevue Hospital’s secure medical unit. These health concerns led his defense to argue that a lengthy sentence would essentially guarantee that he dies in prison. Judge Farber, however, rejected the defense’s request for a shorter sentence.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. spoke after the sentencing. He thanked Haley and all the survivors who came forward to lend their support. He stated that he was moved by their courage and their steadfastness throughout the process. Bragg acknowledged that the legal journey has been obviously challenging for everyone involved.
Weinstein’s downfall has been monumental. He was once an Oscar-winning producer behind massive hits like Pulp Fiction, Shakespeare in Love, and Chocolat. His career collapsed rapidly after the 2017 allegations sparked the #MeToo movement. Beyond this Manhattan case, Weinstein is also awaiting resentencing in a separate rape case in Los Angeles. For now, he remains in a prison medical ward as he prepares for further legal battles.
