‘Give me the bear’: New York city woman terrorized and chased by a man. Then the security guard told her the man was ‘harmless’
She was lucky to have gotten away.
Maia (@maiashaki) from New York City was walking down a street, trying to avoid passing by a strange man. She recalled the harrowing experience of being chased by the stranger on TikTok.
“Give me the bear, give me the bear, give me the bear, I swear, give me the bear,” Maia told TikTok. She was discussing the ‘man vs. bear’ debate that’s been viral online. The question posed is whether a woman would prefer to be alone in the woods with a man or with a bear, and in Maia’s case, she chose the bear.
She explained that she was walking down Fort Greene, Brooklyn, when she noticed a man walking towards her. About six feet in front of her, Maia alleged the man stopped. She described him as having a tunnel-neck mask and a white hoodie. Maia said the man was Black, likely around 5’8″, and weighing around 154lbs.
“He stops six feet in front of me, so I stop,” Maia said. She denied giving him a quizzical look so as not to alarm him. Similarly, this woman, who felt a man follow her through a Chicago parking lot, chose to be polite to prevent escalating the situation. Maia explained, “This is what men need to understand. That sometimes, women play along or go along with certain situations to an extent because we don’t want to further antagonize men, because we are fearful. That doesn’t mean we’re in agreement. We are fearful almost all the time.”
When Maia looked into the man’s eyes, she alleged she “could see the evil in his eyes.” She felt afraid of the man, so she dug through her bag to get her alarm. She saw a gated island nearby and pretended she headed that way instead. “Of course, that antagonized him,” Maia alleged.
Chased at random by a strange man
Maia claimed the man decided to go around and confront her. He allegedly told her he was going to catch and punch her for trying to run away from him. Maia decided to run back, and they were chasing each other in circles.
“Unfortunately, I had sandals on, because it’s summertime. Why would I think I need to put my sneakers on?” she said. Maia said she was able to deceive the man about where she was going, even if she was uncomfortable in her clothes. While being chased, Maia alleged the man continued to scream profanities at her and threatened to catch her.
Then, she found a building ahead with a security guard. She ran to the security guard and pleaded to be let inside. After witnessing Maia being chased, he ushered her into the building. Maia recalled, “I’m like shaking and crying at this point, trying to calm myself down, and the guy’s trying to calm me down.”
Although she was thankful for the security guard’s help, his attempt to soothe Maia didn’t land well. Maia claimed the security guard told her he sees the man who chased her pass by the building often. He also thinks the man is “harmless.”
“What part of that terrorizing was harmless?” Maia expressed, frustrated by the security guard’s words. While she acknowledged that the guard was trying to calm her down, she still took offense at his comment. She added, “Believe us when we tell you it’s never harmless.” Maia said she has filed a police report following the incident.
