Couple finds out they’re having a girl, but people can’t get over dad’s reaction: ‘Please don’t show this video to your daughter when she’s older’

A couple’s gender reveal raised eyebrows for some viewers. They felt like the dad’s reaction would be memorable for years to come, but not in a good way.

In a viral TikTok video with 7.8 million views, user Adia Osorio (@adia.osorio) used a baby’s wardrobe to reveal the gender of their baby.

Both parents grabbed onto a side of the wardrobe and then opened it on cue.

After a countdown, the doors swung open, revealing a closet full of pink clothes, frilly dresses, and pink flowers.

Mom’s face lit up with glee as pink confetti rained on her.

However, Dad appeared to be far less thrilled.

He stood there with a stoic look on his face and quietly swept the confetti from his shoulders.

What Was This Gender Reveal Controversial?

What should have been a happy moment at a gender reveal quickly drew criticism from viewers.

Many noted that the woman’s husband seemed less than thrilled by the news he was having a girl.

“Brushing the confetti off while it’s still falling seems telling,” user Dixiezombie commented.

“Bruh, I’ve been more excited in a McDonald’s drive thru than this guy at his literally child’s gender reveal,” user KACHOW wrote.

Others believed the man’s reaction may hurt his daughter’s feelings in the future.

“Please don’t show this video to your daughter when she’s older it would break her heart,” user
Raylynn Paramo said.

“No smile no hug just the look of disappointment,” user Shovonne Hollingsworth commented.

A few defended the man.

“He doesn’t even look upset, he just looks introverted,” user mothmansnightmare said.

Woman’s Husband Responds

In a series of short clips, Adia jokingly defended her husband.

“Me posting our baby’s gender reveal completely unaware the entire internet was about to psychoanalyze my husband,” text overlaid on one of the videos read.

While the woman appeared to be unbothered by the negative comments, they continued to roll in.

Especially comments suggesting that she should get a divorce.

What Is Gender Disappointment?

Gender disappointment is actually a common experience among soon-to-be-parents.

Many parents have expectations about parenthood and the experience they will have before they even meet their baby.

They may envision the type of clothes they will buy for their baby or whether or not they will enjoy sports.

So it may come as a shock when the script has to be rewritten to accommodate a baby of the opposite sex.

This surprise is met by a wave of shock, sadness or even guilt.

There is little research on the experience of gender disappointment; however, the internet is rife with anecdotes.

It is especially important to confront the feelings that arise from experiencing gender disappointment and not run away from them.

Talking to someone trustworthy can give you the space to work through the feelings and rewrite the gendered script and expectations responsible for them.

Ultimately, it takes time to work through feeling gender disappointment, but many people are able to move on and develop healthy relationships with their children.
