Former Menards Cashier Says He Lost His Job After Viral Customer Video
You just can't do that and expect to keep your job.

A former cashier claimed that he was fired from his job in a video shared on Tiktok. The video shows him interacting with an older woman who felt she needed to address the way he greeted her at the store. Caught mid-conversation, the cashier is told by the woman that he needs to be more “proactive” with his greeting. This, she said, includes smiling at her and making eye contact as she approaches him. She adds that she will not be reporting him to his manager but that she expects more the next time she sees him.
While the cashier’s manner towards the woman is professional throughout, in a follow-up post he revealed that he had been fired from his job shortly after the incident. Although he claimed his sacking was “for no reason,” many users commenting on the video noted that it could have had everything to do with the fact that he posted the video online afterwards.
The former Menards cashier seemingly accepted that he was fired for posting the footage online in a second video. However, he did not back down in his belief that his sacking was not justified. “I got fired because I posted a TikTok of a lady trying to tell me how to do my job,” he said. The user says they caught the whole exchange on a pair of camera glasses and didn’t think anything of it until the video went viral and found its way to the store manager.
Recording People Without Their Knowledge Is Asking For Trouble
Menards has not publicly commented on the former employee’s claims. However, many commenters focused on his decision to record and post footage of a customer without her knowledge. Several suggested that recording customers while working could violate workplace policies, although Menards has not publicly said whether that factored into the decision to terminate his employment.
In this kind of situation, many social media users are usually fully on the side of the employee, but not in this instance. While some did feel sorry about what had happened to him after he handled the customer in a calm manner, others felt it was “creepy” for him or anyone to be filming people without their knowledge. Many added that workers should not be filming customers at all. It is a noticeably different reaction to the wave of sympathy that a lot of other workers caught up in these confrontations have received when sharing their stories online.
While the former cashier has continued to maintain that he did nothing wrong and shouldn’t have been sacked, many TikTok users agreed that sharing the footage with the world was an error of judgement. His situation joins a growing pile of viral clips that have ended in someone losing their job, and perhaps the outcome of this case will deter others from falling into a similar predicament.
