Driver who plowed through a youth soccer game, killing two, released without charges
Even if it was an accident, wouldn't there still be some kind of charges?

On October 17, 2026, a vehicle plowed through a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, killing two and injuring 11 others. A 35-year-old and a 6-year-old died, while those injured ranged in age from 5 to 68. The driver, whose identity has not been publicly revealed, was taken into custody.
On October 18, the Wichita Police Department released a statement that said the driver had been released without charges. However, the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
A soccer game turned tragedy in an instant
According to the Wichita Police Department’s Facebook statement, 911 received multiple calls about a vehicle driving onto the soccer fields on October 17.
Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses said in a press conference the day of the incident, “Officers and paramedics arrived [at the] scene on a field on the west end of the complex where they saw community members and citizens rendering medical aid to those who were injured. They also located a truck on the west side of the field. The driver was still with the vehicle, along with two juveniles.”
Reportedly, the driver and their vehicle, a Chevrolet pickup, had been parked in a parking lot close to the soccer fields before it suddenly drove onto the field, hitting multiple people. The two people killed died at the scene while the other 11 people — five of whom were children — were transported to the hospital with noncritical injuries. It isn’t the first youth sports game to end poorly recently, though this incident was far deadlier than others.
The police’s statement praised witnesses who tried to help the injured: “The Wichita Police Department also extends its sincere appreciation to the community members who immediately stepped forward to help those injured before emergency crews arrived. During an incredibly difficult situation, their willingness to help others demonstrated the compassion and care within our community.”
Authorities seemingly still don’t know what happened
The driver of the vehicle, a 34-year-old woman who reportedly had a child playing at a different field than the one they ran through, was released without charges pending a mechanical examination of their truck and toxicology report results. Authorities conducted at least 30 interviews, including with the two children in the truck at the time of the incident, and consulted with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office before the release. While a vehicle driving into a crowd is often intentional, it appears that might not be the case here.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan expressed condolences in the Facebook statement and said, “Our hearts are with the families[…]as they face an unimaginable loss. What should have been a day of children playing soccer and families spending time together ended in tragedy. We are also thinking about those who were injured, their loved ones and everyone who witnessed what happened. We know this tragedy has affected many people throughout our community, and we want those families to know they are not alone. Our officers and investigators will continue working to understand exactly what happened.”
However, not everyone seems satisfied with the outcome, as commenters on the police statement questioned the driver’s release and whether it was safe for parents and children to return to the playing fields, which briefly closed but reopened this week.
