Man sells everything and travels 1,200 miles to meet his online girlfriend. It doesn’t end well when he learns the truth about her
He traveled miles for love, only to find a digital illusion

Selling everything for love is a big gamble. But one Brazilian man took that risk, traveling more than 1,200 miles to meet a woman he hoped to marry. Unfortunately, the woman he had fallen for wasn’t even real.
Online romance has led people to lose thousands to fake lovers or expect marriage before even meeting someone. But this man’s search for love ended with a strange discovery, and he had already sacrificed almost everything for it.
According to the New York Post, 49-year-old Brazilian bricklayer Edimar Martins sold his belongings to travel from Maranhão to Belo Horizonte, hoping to meet a woman named Jessica Oliveira. Instead, he discovered that his dream partner was an AI-generated character.
He had no idea what was waiting for him
Martins first came across Jessica’s social media profile in 2020. He believed she was real and eventually decided she could be his future wife. On October 9, he sold his possessions to afford a bus ticket to Belo Horizonte, more than 1,200 miles from his home.
“I sold all my things, I got rid of everything,” Martins told TV Mirante. He arrived on October 11, expecting to finally meet Jessica. But after failing to find her, he approached a local radio station for assistance.
“I went to the radio station there, and they said no, that’s fake news, that woman doesn’t exist,” he recalled. The woman he had traveled across Brazil to meet was actually an AI-generated character.
Jessica appeared on a TikTok account called @jessicafazendeira, which reportedly had around 300,000 followers. The videos portrayed her as a woman living on a farm who was looking for a romantic partner.
In one video that has since been deleted, the character promised financial support to whoever agreed to live with her. “I really want to support you, I want you to come to my farm and never work again in your life,” the AI-generated woman declared.
But who was behind Jessica?
After Martins’ experience attracted attention, the person operating the TikTok account addressed the controversy. In a video posted Wednesday, the account owner acknowledged that Jessica was created using AI but denied ever communicating directly with Martins.
“I came here to state the obvious: I am made of artificial intelligence,” the statement began. The account was reportedly created to generate online engagement for commercial purposes rather than arrange relationships.
“I never spoke directly to anyone, much less took anyone to Belo Horizonte. It was a surprise to me to see what is happening,” the account owner explained.
Meanwhile, Martins was stranded in Belo Horizonte after spending his money on the journey. He eventually approached City Hall for assistance when he could no longer afford to return home.
During a conversation with a social worker, Martins explained that he had traveled such a long distance because he was tired of being alone. He wanted to find someone to share his life with.
“It only brings sadness, discouragement, depression. Many people wanted to find a relationship, so I came,” he admitted. He subsequently received assistance to return home.
Despite the disappointment, Martins hasn’t abandoned his hopes of finding a partner. He is reportedly staying with a family member and has expressed an interest in returning to Belo Horizonte.
Surprisingly, he wants to find love in the same city where his expectations fell apart. “I didn’t find her, but I’ll find another one, and it will be in the same place I went, and I’ll go again,” he declared.
Martins’ experience shows how convincing AI-generated personalities can appear online. The TikTok account attracted hundreds of thousands of followers, but he took his belief in the fictional character much further.
He lost his belongings and traveled across Brazil for someone who never existed. Yet, despite everything, he still believes he can find a real partner.
