As a kid with sensitive skin growing up in the Midwest (I’m from Nebraska), I spent a lot of my summers indoors reading. My mom would bring me to work with her so that I could walk down the street to the library and find new and exciting books to read. One summer, I happened to pick up what would become one of my all-time favorite book series. I was perusing the shelves and I found a book with a dragon on the cover. Not only a dragon, a person riding the dragon. Intrigued, I picked it up and was thus thrown into Anne McCaffrey’s amazing sci-fi/adventure series Dragonriders of Pern.
I’ve always been surprised that they never turned these books into movies. They’re absolutely fantastic novels, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking to get into a book series that will keep them occupied for a long time. But I don’t have to wait much longer to see my beloved Lessa, F’lar, Moreta, Robinton, and all of their glorious dragons on the big screen, as Deadline tells us Warner Bros. has optioned the massive 22 book series from the estate of author Anne McCaffrey.
Drew Crevello, the new executive who completed the deal, just moved to Warner Bros. from Fox, where he worked on the X-Men franchise. With The Hobbit, Warner Bros.’ latest big series, set to end later this year, it couldn’t have been a better time to announce this deal. With the recent success in the sci-fi/fantasy genre, including Game of Thrones, I’m surprised they didn’t decide to adapt these books sooner. But I’m happy nonetheless. Guess I better start re-reading the series to pass the time until I can see Dragonriders of Pern on the big screen! I recommend you check them out, too!
