Man Asks Woman Out After Three Chance Encounters. Then Sends Her a Jarring Message the Night Before Their Date: ‘Why Would You Say That?’
She thought everything was going well before that message.
Dating can be a hit or miss. While a date can sometimes lead to a successful relationship, it can just as easily be ruined by one question before it even begins. That was the case for one woman, who thought she might have met someone decent, only to receive an unexpected message that had her cancelling the date and blocking the man.
“I was supposed to be going on a date tonight, but I will no longer be going, and let me tell you why,” Cydney Jordan (@cydneyjordan) said in a video on TikTok. According to Jordan, she met the man after he approached her at the beach and asked for her number. While she thought he was cute, Jordan ultimately declined as she wasn’t dating at the time.
“He was really nice about it. He didn’t push anything at all,” Jordan said. While these kinds of encounters usually end at the first meeting, Jordan said she ran into him again by the post office a few months later. “We kind of make eye contact. He turns around, he’s like, ‘Oh hey,’ and I’m like, ‘Hi.’ But I’m still running into the post office. Like I was in a rush,” Jordan said. “He kinda seemed like he was in a rush too. So nothing came about, obviously.”
It felt like a Hallmark movie coming to life
Their post office run-in may have ended without much fanfare, but the world was seemingly pushing the two together in a story befitting a Hallmark movie. Around six or seven months after the second encounter, Jordan and the man saw each other again for the third time when they were running errands at a grocery store.
“Hey, maybe third time’s a charm, right? Cydney from the beach, post office, and the grocery store,” the man said, Jordan recalled. This time, Jordan gave the man her number when he asked and noted how he was being “silly, funny, cute” during the interaction. The two messaged back and forth and eventually settled on going to dinner at a restaurant.
Leading up to their date, Jordan and the man continued messaging each other, which she described as “regular interactions and conversations.” But things seemingly took a turn the night before the big day—all because of a text message.
“I see that I have a text from this man around 12:30, I was asleep when he sent it,” Jordan said. “I opened it up, and it’s a screenshot of a text conversation between him and presumably another man. There was a boy’s name at the top.”
According to Jordan, the screenshot showed her Hinge profile and a message from the man’s friend, saying, “Oh, it’s that girl from the beach. Did anything end up happening between you guys?” The man allegedly responded no before the friend told him he was going to “shoot my shot” on the app. Jordan said she initially didn’t understand the point of receiving the screenshot messages, and eventually went back to sleep.
When she woke up the next morning, Jordan went about her day and prepared for her date before she remembered the text messages. Looking back at the message, Jordan realized the man had sent her three screenshots.
The message that ended the date
In the first screenshot, the friend asked if anything happened between Jordan and the man. In the second screenshot, the friend told the man he was going to match with Jordan on Hinge, to which the man allegedly responded with a “go for it.” However, his follow-up response in the third screenshot was what seemingly shocked Jordan.
“The guy responds, the guy I’m supposed to go on a date with, responds and says, ‘Go for it, bro. Maybe we can tag team her,’” Jordan said, as she was visibly speechless. She continued, “No, you actually cannot tag team me. That was never an option. […] Why would you say that?”
Jordan was left confused and claimed that she and the man never had a conversation that indicated that type of language was okay. But the message had already soured her perception of the man, and she just ended up deleting the messages and blocking his contact.
Viewers were also confused as to what the man’s end goal was when he sent the message, saying, “1) why would he say that? 2) why would he SHOW YOU???” While others thought it was a sign that potentially saved Jordan from a disaster. “I feel like someone had your back. Like a good girl’s girl. Someone else found that on his phone and sent it to you,” a viewer wrote.
Some were a bit more concerned about the man’s behavior. “it’s honestly so scary men have the ability the act SO normal and then all of a sudden flip completely,” one viewer said. Others theorized about what may have prompted the man to send the screenshots, saying, “I think he got possessive of you and was jealous you were on hinge (expecting exclusivity wrongly) and then took the anger out by disrespecting you/ showing he didn’t care.”
While some dates end because of a lack of messages, in this case, it might have been better if a message hadn’t been sent. Either way, Jordan’s experience just showed how dating can be unpredictable.
