America, We Need to Talk: Donald Trump Goes Full Green Lantern and Vows to Deport Evil With One Superpower Upgrade

The White House has turned Donald Trump into Green Lantern. On September 6, the official White House account posted an AI generated video depicting the president with the DC superhero’s glowing power ring, using it to create a barrier in front of a group of people and later appearing over scenes of American manufacturing and U.S. military power. The White House also posted the 28 second video to its official website.

The post uses the Green Lantern Corps’ familiar oath as its caption: ‘In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might beware my power… Green Lantern’s light!’ The video does not explain its connection to DC Comics beyond the use of Green Lantern’s imagery and oath, but its scenes correspond with several recurring subjects in the Trump administration’s messaging, including immigration, domestic manufacturing and military strength.

The timing also caught attention. The White House posted the video on the same night HBO aired the fourth episode of Lanterns, the new DC series starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The White House has not said whether the post was connected to the HBO series, although the timing gives the video a timely connection to Lanterns.

So Why Did the White House Pick Green Lantern?

The White House video could have put Trump in just about any superhero’s costume, but it went with Green Lantern, complete with the ring and the character’s actual oath. The video itself is pretty straightforward. Trump uses the green light to stop people at the border, then the imagery shifts to American manufacturing before moving on to military aircraft and ships. It’s a 28-second montage that ties Trump’s Green Lantern persona to immigration, American manufacturing, and military strength.

The White House hasn’t explained why it chose Green Lantern. The post did come shortly after yet another example of the administration using widely known pop culture references for political messaging.

On September 4, the White House launched an online arcade featuring retro-style games based on Trump’s policy agenda. Reuters and The Associated Press reported that the games included “Build the Wall,” focused on border security, and “Rio Run,” which involves a Trump character encountering people representing border crossers.

Comic Book Fans Noticed a Few Things About This

Naturally, the comic book crowd had something to say about that. Some responses questioned whether Trump even fits the Green Lantern lore. One commenter noted that DC ties the Green Lantern ring to willpower, while yellow represents fear. Another argued that the Guardians of the Universe, who select Green Lanterns, wouldn’t exactly hand Trump a ring.

Those are opinions from people reacting to the post, not statements from DC or the White House. Still, the reactions show how quickly the conversation shifted from the video itself to whether Green Lantern was even the right character to use. The White House had taken a superhero with decades of established lore and put him right in the middle of Trump’s political messaging.
