Another rumor bites the dust: It looks like Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles) won’t be directing Star Wars: Episode VII after all. Granted, it was less a rumor than an instance of “Oh wow, how cool would that be?” (Though a few weeks back there was a theory floating around that his upcoming sci-film film 1952 was actually Star Wars in disguise.) Anyway, it’s all a moot point now as the director has taken to Twitter to dash the hopes of everyone who wanted Bird to take to the Stars.

Hey, I’ve been remarkably light on the puns so far today. Gotta catch up.

Tweeted Bird (should that even count as pun #2?):

“@rsavenell: You are on people’s lists as top choice for Star Wars, yet haven’t confirmed. Please end this tease!”Not doing Star Wars.

So. That’s that. He later tweeted that “the science fiction film I AM doing is gonna be cool” and responded to a tweet saying he was somehow disrespecting Star Wars (???) with “I’m not slamming Star Wars. I’m just doing ‘1952‘! Sheesh!”

To clarify the whole not-slamming-Star-Wars thing, Bird also expressed his opinion that “Michael Arndt is a fantastic writer and Kathy Kennedy is a brilliant producer. I will be first in line to see the new STAR WARS.”

Oh well. It was a good idea while it lasted. Now, Brad. Any word on whether 1952 will involve Nikola Tesla? Pleeeease?
