‘Battered me!’: Southwest passenger’s luggage gets checked in over lack of space. Then claims the flight attendant assaulted her

Air travel isn’t always a seamless experience, as unexpected situations can suddenly pop up, sometimes even before you board the plane. That was the case for one woman, whose carry-on luggage was suddenly checked in, resulting in a full-blown meltdown as passengers boarded a Southwest flight.

The incident was shared by TikTok user @savedbygrace_2009, whose video gained over 2.5 million views. In the video, a Southwest Airlines flight attendant can be seen blocking a woman from entering the aircraft as she repeatedly yells at the man.

“Get out of my face! Get out of my face,” the woman yelled as the attendant kept asking her to get off the plane, before telling the attendants not to touch her or her belongings. According to savedbygrace_2009, the incident allegedly began when the woman sat in an empty seat that wasn’t booked under her name.

The TikToker user claimed that the woman “felt entitled to the seat” that wasn’t hers after Southwest Airlines supposedly forced her to check in her carry-on luggage when there was no longer room in the overhead compartments. An attendant allegedly made her return to her assigned seat, which triggered the incident in the video.

The woman claimed that the attendant “assaulted and battered me” when he allegedly pushed her as she was standing in the aircraft. The attendant repeatedly denied her claims and argued that it was the woman who pushed into him. In another angle of the video, however, the woman can be seen aggressively shoving the attendant while he kept his arms away from her.

The other passengers were seemingly over the woman’s meltdown, which, unfortunately, isn’t an isolated experience. “Get off, lady,” a female passenger can be heard saying. Another chimed in, saying, “Get the f*** off the plane, b****.”

The passengers’ protests didn’t deter the woman, who kept arguing with the attendants and claimed assault. “Ma’am, you are inconveniencing everybody. Please, step off the aircraft,” the attendant told the woman calmly. “They did not have the right to check our bags if we didn’t want to,” the woman said.

The incident lasted for over three minutes before security finally arrived to offload the woman. According to savedbygrace_2009, the woman didn’t get to stay on the flight and supposedly left the plane in handcuffs, although this was not seen in the video.

Viewers couldn’t comprehend why plane meltdowns are seemingly common these days. One said, “Can a therapist or someone explain this phenomenon? I really want to know how we get here so often?” Another added that unruly passengers are no longer thinking of the consequences of such actions, saying, “How come people aren’t afraid of the ‘No fly’ list anymore?!”

Airlines can ask passengers to check in their carry-on luggages

Some were a bit more in disbelief that the woman was complaining about a service she didn’t have to pay for. “Over a FREE checked bag???” a viewer wrote. Others also pointed out that the attendant wasn’t even getting paid for dealing with the outburst as the aircraft’s doors weren’t closed. “And he isn’t even getting paid during this entire confrontation,” a viewer said.

According to Travel and Leisure, airlines will sometimes request volunteers to check their luggage at the gate free of charge just before boarding, despite space in the overhead compartments. The outlet notes that this has more to do with “operational forecasts” than the final amount of space once passengers have fully boarded.

Experts say gate agents make the decision based on the information they have on hand and anticipate whether the plane will lack sufficient overhead space. It has more to do with operational costs, as every minute an aircraft stays at the gate has financial implications.

The less amount of carry-on luggage brought inside the aircraft allows agents and attendants to streamline boarding, allowing passengers to quickly find their assigned seats and preventing takeoff delays. But most of the time, by the time the final boarding groups get on the aircraft, the overhead compartments are almost completely full, so they are often the ones asked to volunteer to check in their luggage.

In the case of the woman in the video, savedbygrace_2009 claimed she was part of the seventh out of the eight groups to board the aircraft, which would explain why she was asked to check in her luggage.
