A woman decided to surgery max and get 6 cosmetic surgeries at once with fatal consequences

Surgery always comes with risks, and for 51-year-old Andreia Vieira Gaspar, those risks turned out to be fatal when she passed away in her sister’s arms after undergoing six cosmetic procedures during one surgery. Her family now wants to know what happened during the surgery that led to the issues that took Gaspar’s life.

Gaspar traveled from Spain to Brazil for the operation, which included a facelift, blepharoplasty, liposuction, and fat grafting for her face. Gaspar allegedly did her pre-op testing in Spain and had the tests sent to the team in Brazil, and she didn’t have a consultation with the team who would be operating on her prior to the procedure.

The testing allegedly showed that Gaspar had a bacterial infection when she had the operation done, but the nature of that infection hasn’t been released, so it’s not clear if that could have impacted the complications that she suffered from following the surgery, which wasn’t the case for one woman whose post-op feelings of sickness turned out to be the result of a kidney being unexpectedly removed.

The operating team is cooperating with investigations

The team that operated on Gaspar denies that the complications were due to their operation and care, and they state that they’re cooperating fully with the proper authorities who are investigating Gaspar’s death, but they refuse to provide details outside of those channels due to patient-doctor confidentiality.

Gaspar’s sister, Djiane, was present with Gaspar when her tongue became swollen and she began struggling to breathe. Gaspar’s sister called for help, but she claims that the hospital caring for Gaspar had the facilities needed to help during an emergency situation like her sister’s. The staff attempted resuscitation, but were unable to revive Gaspar.

Cosmetic surgeries being increasingly common doesn’t reduce risk

Cosmetic procedures and surgeries have become more accessible to the average person in recent years, but the availability and popularity of them doesn’t mean that the risk is gone. Instead, cosmetic operations can come with more risks than other types of operations, especially in cases like eye color-changing procedures, which come with a list of complications that include vision loss for a cosmetic outcome.

Gaspar’s situation is unfortunately not the only case where somebody has had severe— or even fatal— complications from a cosmetic procedure, and commenters online have asked why she was allowed to have six procedures done at once.

These tragic situations are important reminders to research procedures before you get them, the risks and outcomes, what recovery looks like, and the qualifications of the team that will be performing them. It won’t remove the risks, but it can help reduce them.
