A Georgia principal pushed through a crowd to stop a cafeteria fight, then the students started singing ‘Happy Birthday’

The only fight here was for this principal's heart.

A Georgia high school principal raced to break up what he thought was a fight between students, only to discover that the cafeteria chaos was an elaborate birthday surprise. Bobby Davis, principal of Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School, rushed to intervene before the students broke into a chorus of “Happy Birthday” and revealed the prank.

The surprise was organized by 17-year-old senior De’Zayviun Watkins, who wanted to show Davis how much he meant to him. Footage of the moment, shared by Lauren Cantrell on Facebook, quickly went viral, drawing millions of views as viewers watched the principal’s panic turn into unrestrained excitement.

Davis later admitted that the students had fooled him completely. “Usually I’m pretty aware of what’s going on, but they got me good,” he told the Chattanooga Times Free Press. “I fell for it, hook, line and sinker 100%. I had no idea.”

The fake fight had the principal sprinting to the cafeteria

In the video, Davis can be seen hurrying into the cafeteria, where students have gathered around two boys who appear to be fighting. He pushes through the crowd and reaches for one of the students, seemingly intent on stopping the altercation.

But the scene quickly takes a turn. Instead of an argument escalating, the crowd starts cheering and singing to celebrate Davis’ birthday. The principal’s alarm gives way to laughter, hugs, and an enthusiastic celebration with the students who had just tricked him.

Davis recalled how he had received a frantic call about a “massive fight” and was worried because such an incident was unusual for the school. He said he hurried over as fast as he could, unaware that the students and staff had arranged the surprise.

The prank was more than a birthday gag, though. Watkins had a personal reason for wanting to celebrate the principal.

The student behind the prank says Davis changed his life

Watkins said Davis had helped him through a difficult period when he struggled with anger and frequently got into fights. The two grew closer through football, where Davis was involved as a coach, and conversations after practice helped Watkins think differently about his future.

“If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today,” Watkins shared. Davis encouraged him to channel his energy into poetry and music and to consider a trade career. Watkins, who hopes to become an auto mechanic, wanted to use the surprise to thank the principal before his time at the school came to an end.

Birthday surprises have produced other emotional moments online, including a Dallas woman whose surprise left her stepdad in tears. For Watkins, the surprise was a way to say thank you.

In a comment on the viral video, Watkins wrote that Davis had “single-handedly changed me for the better” and that he would never take the principal’s impact on his life for granted. He also praised Davis for caring about students beyond their performance on the football field.

Davis isn’t the only educator whose impact has lasted beyond the classroom. In Illinois, more than 200 former students returned to sing for a retiring choir teacher at his last concert. Speaking to TODAY, Davis said students need to feel loved and respected to learn, and that young people can tell when adults genuinely care about them.
