Dallas Woman Had a Huge Birthday Surprise for Her Stepdad. He Found a Piece of Paper That Made Him Cry.

It’s a blessing in life to have a father who’s willing to step up and own their role in a child’s life. Ash Roe (@ashroephoto) from Dallas shared a clip of her stepfather’s birthday. The gift she gave her stepdad is perhaps one of the most unforgettable presents he’ll ever receive in his lifetime.

“In 2017, I had my last name legally changed to match my stepfather’s,” her caption on TikTok reads. Roe also said that her biological father thought it was a “hard pill to swallow” when she made the decision.

What made Roe’s case unique was that at the time of the video, she was already 21. Adult adoptions are uncommon, but Roe wanted to prove a point.

For years, Roe held on to the video of the moment, where her stepfather found out about the name change. But she said she decided to share the clip to make people understand that her stepfather “gets the credit for raising her.”

In the video, her stepfather was filmed opening up a large box.

“Be careful with the papers that are in there,” Roe told her stepfather. The first thing he pulled out was a card in an orange envelope. It had “happy birthday to the best dad” upfront.

“The best kind of dad is the one you laugh with and learn to disagree with… Happy birthday,” he read, with Roe’s name signed on it. The man seemed like he was on the verge of tears just from the card alone.

An unforgettable birthday present

But then, he opened a different paper that came from the box. It seemed like a court case number for a process. At first, Roe’s stepfather was confused by what it meant—it could be a speeding ticket for all he knows.

“Take a look inside the box,” Roe told him, and her stepfather found chocolate. Beneath it was yet another document.

“Petition for name change?” He looked at her, expecting her to explain. But Roe told him to keep reading, and then he found out she changed her surname to Roe. The man could no longer hold back his tears and went in for a hug with his daughter.

“From that day forward, he wasn’t my stepdad anymore. He was my dad,” Roe said in her post.

The video gets blurry

The moment was so heartwarming for the family that another member in the room was heard saying, “Dammit! I said I wasn’t going to cry!” Needless to say, he wasn’t alone in that reaction. Many people on TikTok were also in tears over Roe’s video.

One commenter wrote, “Hey, just so you know, this gets real blurry at the end.”

Someone else replied, “I knew I was going to cry and I still watched it. That’s on me.”

Others congratulated Roe over the name change, praising her for honoring her stepdad.

A commenter claiming to be a family lawyer wrote, “I practice family law in Fayette County. These are my favorite stories. Also, adult adoption isn’t pointless! Definitely not necessary, but there can be benefits! So happy for your family.”

Another person said, “What a nice way to honor your step dad’s contribution to your life. Step parents always get a bad rap, but the reality is that they have a much harder parenting path than bio parents.”

At one point, he chose her to be his daughter—in this clip, she officially honored him as her father. It’s heartwarming, and it goes to show that blood is not always thicker than the bonds people choose to form in life.
