The event, which ran from 3 p.m. to midnight, left attendees fighting over scraps of appetizers before dozens bolted to a nearby pizza place to avoid starvation. The situation escalated when the groom’s grandmother fainted from hunger and had to be rushed to the ER.
The ordeal started when the invitation mentioned both dinner and “lots of appetizers.” The guest who shared the story in a Reddit post, along with their husband, ate a light lunch before arriving, expecting a full meal later. Instead, waiters brought out only one or two trays of appetizers every 15 minutes for over 200 people.
Younger, more aggressive guests mobbed the kitchen, leaving older attendees with nothing. After hours of waiting, the bride’s mother admitted that dinner had been canceled due to cost, despite still claiming there would be plenty of appetizers. By 7 p.m., around 30 guests, including the Reddit poster, escaped to a pizza place across the street, where staff were stunned by the influx of formally dressed customers devouring mediocre pizza like “starving wolverines.”

When the group returned, the bride’s mother scolded them for leaving, calling it “very rude.” The groom’s grandmother collapsing from hunger later that night only underscored how dire the situation had become. The Redditor joked that survivors deserved T-shirts for enduring the “nearly food-less reception.”
Comments on the post were brutal. One user called the bride’s mother’s criticism “sadistic,” while another suggested she should’ve just ordered pizzas for everyone. Others questioned why anyone would return after such poor treatment, though free cocktails and a great band might’ve been the draw.
Another commenter, an events manager, shared a similar horror story: a wedding where guests stood in the rain for 20 minutes waiting for the bride and groom, only to be served store-bought cheese, meat, and a cheap cake. The bride later complained that no one cheered for her grand entrance or cleared the car park for her horse-drawn carriage.
These aren’t isolated incidents
According to PEOPLE, another Reddit post from June 2025 detailed a guest traveling almost six hours to a destination wedding, only to find almost no food available. After an exhausting two-hour Latin mass, the reception offered a single bowl of chips and salsa during cocktail hour, which vanished instantly. The “dinner” was a tiny taco buffet with barely enough food for 100 people.
Tables were called one at a time, and by the time later groups got their turn, the trays were nearly empty. The cake cutting was just for show – guests weren’t offered a single slice, only a chocolate ice pop each. The poster and their group had to find food in the city afterward because they were still starving.
Reddit users had strong opinions about these fiascos. Many argued that if couples can’t afford to feed their guests, they should invite fewer people or skip the big wedding event entirely. One commenter put it bluntly: “I’d rather go without decorations than skimp on food.” Another called it “ridiculous” to host a large event without providing adequate meals.
It’s a question of respect
The back-to-back stories highlight a growing trend of weddings cutting corners in ways that leave guests feeling disrespected in many ways. While budgets are always a consideration, food is one area where skimping can turn a celebration into a survival challenge. The Reddit poster from the Hunger Games wedding summed it up best with her post. Weddings are already stressful enough without adding starvation to the mix.
