Two Fishermen Survived Five Days In The Pacific By Clinging To A Fishing Cooler

Two Mexican fishermen survived five days stranded in the Pacific Ocean with no food or water after their boat sank, using a large fishing cooler to stay afloat. Mexico’s Navy found the men roughly 150 miles off the coast of Chiapas after their fishing cooperative lost contact with them.

The fishermen, aged 53 and 32, had left the fishing town of Paredón on August 13. Their cooperative sent a distress call the following day after losing contact with them, beginning a search that eventually covered a vast area of the Pacific by sea and air, according to CNN. The incident is another example of how quickly a routine trip can turn into a survival situation at sea.

The Mexican Navy eventually found the men floating inside a large fishing cooler. CNN reported that the Navy did not identify the fishermen, and authorities have not explained exactly how the Camaronera became disabled or sank in rough conditions.

The cooler kept them afloat for five days

The Navy used surface ships, interceptor boats, and aircraft to search for the missing fishermen before a patrol vessel spotted the cooler in the ocean. Video released by the Navy showed the large turquoise container bobbing among dark ocean swells as a ship approached and rescuers pulled the two men to safety.

The cooler had become their only means of staying above the water after their boat disappeared. According to CNN, the fishermen said they ate and drank “absolutely nothing” during the five days they spent stranded at sea. It wasn’t the first time an ordinary object had unexpectedly become a crucial piece of survival equipment.

The fishermen later described the ordeal in a video released by the Mexican Navy. One said they did not think they would survive and could only pray while waiting for help from the Navy.

The other described the experience as the hardest thing imaginable, saying he would not wish it on anyone, “not even my worst enemy.” Their comments underscored how little the men had to rely on while they waited for rescuers to find them in the open ocean.

They were eventually reunited with their families

The Navy eventually airlifted both fishermen to port, where they received medical treatment for severe dehydration. They survived five days at sea before reuniting with their families.

CNN reported that the circumstances surrounding the boat’s disappearance remained unclear, leaving unanswered questions about what happened before the fishermen ended up in the cooler. The Navy has not provided a detailed account of how the Camaronera became disabled or sank.

The fishermen’s cooperative reported them missing, the Navy searched for five days, and rescuers eventually spotted the cooler carrying both men. A piece of fishing equipment that would normally have served a much simpler purpose had become their only way to stay afloat until help arrived.
