Angry YouTube Man Mocks Zendaya’s Acting Range By…Using Still Images

Zendaya poses at the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

With the world eagerly anticipating Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, a first-look photo was recently posted on X of Zendaya as Athena. Typical for first-look photos, not much is revealed, and it is a fairly neutral shot of Zendaya in the film. That decision, it seems, has ruffled some feathers online amongst those who have never felt the touch of a woman.

YouTuber and wannabe film critic The Critical Drinker was so bothered by Zendaya’s existence in a Nolan flick that he decided to edit together multiple screenshots of her from various projects, sarcastically saying, “Displaying more of that famous acting range, I see.”

Now it is important to remember that every person’s resting face always looks the same. It’s just how faces work. We all only have the one, and it has to settle somehow! This same sentiment could be used for every actor in the world.

Also, if we’re going to be nitpick-y here like OP clearly is, Zendaya is still acting in all of these. A naturally downturned mouth is not equal to a lack of talent. It’s in the eyes. However, I suppose I can’t expect nuance to be something somebody called The Critical Drinker would get.

You’re really saying all of this on Al Gore’s Internet?

Being a woman is exhausting. It really is. Nothing is ever good enough, and God forbid your face have a neutral resting point. If it does, you’re accused of having no acting range. Never mind that every photo chosen is a still, not of Zendaya actually acting. Which she can do quite well, thank you. Although, I would not expect people like this to grasp that.

A user quoted the post and included screenshots of Zendaya in various emotional moments in her filmography, saying, “You’re incredibly dishonest.”

Another user also quoted the post, saying, “see this is how i know she’s a great actor, because even after cherry-picking similar expressions, each one still says something different to me.”

I looked through the replies to The Critical Drinker’s post so that you don’t have to, and I feel like I should be compensated somehow. Predictably, it is a swamp full of racist and misogynistic people. They can’t even be witty! All I’m asking for is something clever in their hate. Please.

It really is telling, however, that women are the ones who get continually crucified for minor perceived “infractions” like this. Yes, you can have your opinion online, et cetera. However, that does not mean your opinion still isn’t wrong. Therefore, you are not immune from criticism yourself. And we will gladly point that out to you!
