Woman loses wedding invitation. Then she finds out it’s black-tie—but it’s far too late: ‘I 100% would’ve asked you to leave’

TikTok is really not happy with one couple who showed up to a wedding in outfits that didn’t match the dress code.
TikToker @nickiswan_rn posted what she likely thought was a harmless video of the two of them looking out of place at a ceremony. The clip, which has gotten over 8.1 million views, generated a wave of backlash instead.
“Black tie wedding,” she wrote in the video’s text overlay.
In the clip, the couple sits among wedding guests all wearing all-black formal attire. She’s in a casual white dress with a floral print, while her partner wears a blue Hawaiian-style shirt.
“When you lose the wedding invitation… certain details get missed,” she wrote in the caption.
In a follow-up video, the couple appears in new outfits, both now wearing black.
“Correction: black attire not black tie,” she wrote.
She adds that they didn’t stay long after realizing the mistake.
“We left immediately after!” she wrote on screen. “Rectified the situation with emergency supplies. Now we were ready to fade into the background and continue to celebrate the newlyweds.”
In the caption, she explains how they managed to change.
“We do not live close to the venue but my AMAZING friend does, and brought me a dress. Then we found a store close by that had a shirt for my husband,” she wrote.
She also acknowledges the attention the video has received.
“Thankfully TikTok has made it possible to relive this mortifying experience with added commentary any time I feel like being humbled.”
Commenters Weren’t Sympathetic
In the comments, many viewers said the explanation didn’t excuse the outfit choices.
“Regardless of losing the invitation, of all the colors you could’ve chose to wear you picked white?” one person wrote.
“And your man wore a fishing shirt…” another said.
Others questioned how the situation happened at all.
“Oh no! I ‘accidentally’ forgot to look at the dress code! Woopsies! I’ll just wear the one color you should never wear to a wedding!” a third wrote.
Is Not Following A Wedding Dress Code A Faux Pas?
Generally, yes.
According to Vogue, a couple’s wedding dress codes should inform the way you dress on their big day.
Couples usually spend a lot of time and money planning the day, and following the attire guidelines is seen as a basic level of respect for that effort.
The publication also notes that guests can take cues from how the event is described to decide how formal to go, including details like how covered up to be or what level of polish is expected.
One of the biggest mistakes, according to Vogue, is wearing white. Unless the couple explicitly asks for it, it’s widely understood to be off-limits for guests.
