Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose With Kyle Chandler’s New Netflix Movie

The Rip is a film heading to Netflix and Friday Night Lights fans realized that Kyle Chandler is along for the crime thriller.
Most of the headlines around this movie surround Matt Damon and Ben Affleck reunion. People love those team-ups. But, don’t sleep on the rest of this cast, asked Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor (fresh off that Globes win, we see you mama!), Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sasha Calle, and more are here. It’s a star-studded affair!
Netflix fans might not be aware that Chandler played Coach Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights. But, he’s always a welcome sight on our television screens! (In fact, his media tour for The Rip has mostly revolved around his time on the NBC drama and this current role.) Back in the Friday Night Lights days, Chandler brought an authority to the Dillon high school football team. The Panthers had some personalities but Coach never let it get out of hand.
Chandler is so beloved in this role that TV aficionados can’t help but bring up Coach in best-of lists and the like. Making him an authority figure immediately triggers the antennas of longtime viewers all over. So, well played by The Rip.
What is The Rip about?

Well, Netflix describes it: “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.”
In the film, Chandler plays Matty, a DEA agent who nows our main crew and becomes an important figure when JD calls him.
Why is this new movie capturing so much attention?
The Rip is the latest meeting of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. It feels like any Y2K nostalgia we’ve got left can’t resist that pairing. (Honestly, J-Lo and Ben either, for the record.) It just reminds people of a different time. And, to be honest, their track record together is pretty good! But, that’s definitely part of it.
From another angle, A story about corruption and authority figures is right up most people’s alley. Netflix’s TUDUM sat down with Joe Carnahan to talk about the inspiration for The RIP. Because the director and rider has such close ties to law enforcement, there’s feeding Hart up under all of the spectacle that usually accompanies these kind of police stories.
“The Rip came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department,” Carnahan told the outlet. “It’s inspired in part by his life and then, by my enduring love for those classic ‘70’s cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era — films like Serpico and Prince of The City and more recently, Michael Mann’s Heat.”
