‘Cheap doesn’t mean it’ll work’: Texas woman walks into Target for $5 ‘gadget grab.’ Then she shows what all she gets

It’s the holiday season—which means that everyone is in the market for stocking stuffers. If you’re still shopping for presents, you’ve probably come across some of the cheap electronics that now line the shelves of many major retailers, like Target.
Seeing some of these items—and their low prices—you might be tempted to pick some up. But are these items worth it? One internet user investigates.
What’s The Deal With These Target Electronics?
In a video with over 6.8 million views, TikTok user Luz (@htx.jeysy14) shows off a variety of items for sale at Target.
“This is your sign to go to Target, and go to the Five Dollar Gadget Grab, and buy these,” she starts.
The TikToker proceeds to show off a variety of electronics, which she claims are available at Target for just $5.
“We’re gonna get a mini mic, a mini camera and… the walkie talkies,” she says, excited. “Guys, they have so many colors — and they’re only $5!
Are These Really A Good Deal?
Looking closely at the items shown in the video, one can see that items similar to these are easily purchasable online for less money, as long as one is willing to wait.
For example, a microphone with a strong similarity to the one shown in the video can be purchased on Temu for $2.31. The camera can be found online for $2 to $12, depending on the seller.
Even if you can find these items for a better price, it’s not certain that you would want to. The walkie-talkies, for example, have an average rating of just 2 out of 5 stars on the Target website. Several reviewers claim that the devices simply do not work.
While similar mini microphones have decent reviews, you’re probably better off using your phone camera than this digital one. One reviewer identifies a comparable camera as the “worst camera ever.” Reviewers on Target’s website note issues like poor image quality, size, and a brief battery life as among the reasons why one might want to reconsider their purchase.
In a comment, Luz said that her own experience with the items was mixed.
“The camera is good I’ll be taking good care of her,” she wrote. “The mic also is good the walkie talkies are trash.”
Are Any Of These $5 Deals Worth It?
In a Reddit thread on the topic, users discussed whether any of these Target items were worth the $5.
Some claimed that certain items were actually quite popular.
“In my store the phone cases, the earbuds, and the mini mics have sold the best. especially the phone cases! the rest hasn’t really moved much,” wrote a commenter.
“I recently bought the pizza mouse.. decent,” offered a second. “You get what you paid for, it hasn’t broken yet lol.”
That said, most claimed that one would be better served by saving some cash and buying a proper version of these items for more money.
“It’s just Heyday E-Waste but with even more plastic ($5 charging wire for the car versus the $20 ones),” stated a user. “Eventually people will realize it’s better to either wait a week for some J-Labs to go on sale than buy really really bad $5 headphones.”
“Just go ahead and flush a five dollar bill down the toilet instead,” echoed another.
“Everything in that section: bad,” detailed a third.

Commenters Say You Should Save Your Money
In the comments section, some users said that these items weren’t worth the money.
“This is your sign to not buy things just bc it’s cheap,” wrote a user.
Others said that one should simply not shop at Target due to the chain getting rid of their DEI policies.
“This is your reminder that we should be boycotting Target,” declared a commenter.
“Why are yall still going to target?!?” questioned another.
