New York Woman Allegedly Shown Surprise Baby During Ultrasound. Then She Uncovers What the OBGYN Clinic May Have Done: ‘Wish This Wasn’t Real’
They switched on the ultrasound and she saw a surprise baby on the screen.
Patients have much to dread about doctor’s appointments. They either leave the room feeling relieved or are given earth-shattering news about their health that fills them with grief. But Becca (@baby.got.bec) from New York City has accused Garden OBGYN in Manhattan of being “grossly misinformed as a practice” after an ultrasound gone wrong.
“I feel like it’s really important that I share my experience that happened at Garden OBGYN on 67th and Second Avenue in Manhattan,” Becca said. Although she claimed she didn’t want to make the video, she felt the need to “warn” other women against receiving care from the establishment after her “awful” experience. She further claimed that patients who visit any branch of Garden OBGYN will most likely be attended to by a physician assistant, not an “actual” doctor.
“I’m 26, I’ve never really had any serious medical issues,” she stated. Becca also said that she didn’t mind seeing different doctors from time to time, since they’re only annual checkups or for a birth control follow-up appointment. When she went to Garden OBGYN, Becca said it was for her annual appointment.
“I got blood work done, a Pap smear, and I asked for an ultrasound and sonogram,” Becca said. She also recommended that other women get an ultrasound and sonogram during OBGYN visits to know what’s going on with their bodies.
“My problem started in the sonogram room,” Becca alleged. The staff applied gel to her belly, then started the ultrasound. What she saw next made her scream.
An ultrasound she’ll never forget
“I [expletive] you not, a baby in a uterus is on that screen. A baby. And I screamed,” Becca said. She panicked, telling the technicians that it couldn’t be hers. She came in for an annual checkup, not to have a surprise child thrown at her mid-appointment. Becca was as freaked out as a 21-year-old who had been willed a baby against his wishes.
“The computer must have glitched. That’s an eight-month pregnant patient who was here before you,” the assistant explained. Becca was appalled by the alleged mishandling and thought it may have been a HIPAA violation to show another patient’s scans to another. Nevertheless, the staff continued with the appointment and did a scan on Becca’s uterus.
“At first, I found it a little funny. Now, looking back at it, I’m pissed,” she said. There was no baby, much to Becca’s relief. She went to the doctor’s office so that they could explain what they found in her body.
Describing a cyst like it was a Lovecraftian monster
Becca said they found a dermoid cyst in her left ovary. What frustrated her wasn’t the findings, but how the staffers supposedly broke the news to Becca. She also alleged that the student doctor and the physician assistant were seated close, and they would “make eyes” at each other. They allegedly treated the finding as if it were gossip material.
“Should I tell her? Should we tell her?” the physician assistant supposedly told the student doctor. Becca felt infuriated by the situation because her body was on the line.
“They did not want to tell me what a dermoid cyst was because they were scared that I was going to freak out,” she alleged. But Becca said she did end up freaking out because of how they described the cyst to her.
“A dermoid cyst is different from other cysts because this one has hair, teeth, and nails,” the professionals allegedly told her. Becca claimed that they didn’t explain that a dermoid cyst was merely a buildup of three different types of cells from her body. In her confusion, Becca said she even asked if it was her unabsorbed twin, which they denied.
Becca said she was on the verge of a panic attack. Then, the professionals suggested running a blood panel to draw tumor markers. When she heard them mention a tumor, Becca clarified if she needed to brace herself for the possibility of cancer.
“I don’t know, maybe,” the student doctor allegedly said as she shrugged her shoulders. The professionals supposedly explained that the cyst is 4 cm big, but Becca alleged that they didn’t give actionable recommendations. Moreover, she asked other questions about her fertility and health, and she alleged that the professionals kept giving non-committal answers.
Becca alleged that Garden OBGYN did not accurately measure the size of her cyst. “They measured the cyst twice the size than it actually was, because they included my ovary as a part of the [expletive] measurement,” Becca alleged.
According to Becca, the cyst, which was supposedly 4cm, was only 2cm. Becca expressed her anger at the situation, alleging that even her mother had an equally horrendous appointment with Garden OBGYN: “She left that office crying, because they left her thinking that she had cancer.”
She got another checkup from a different practice, where Becca said she had an “incredible” experience. During the appointment, they also redid her ultrasound and sonogram.
Garden OBGYN has not commented on Becca’s story.
