‘Tonight was not a good night’: Bernie Sanders is shattered over the passing of the resolution that will benefit the rich and harm the working class

On Sunday, the United States government may have taken a small step closer to ending the ongoing shutdown after eight Democrats joined the Republicans in voting for the continuing CR. As a part of the American population, including Republicans and conservative-leaning individuals celebrate this news, Senator Bernie Sanders emphasises the implications of Sunday’s events, which may not be as straightforward as they seem.

On Monday, Bernie Sanders took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his dissatisfaction with the Democrats joining the Republicans to support the clean Continuing Resolution. He pointed out that their support for the Republicans could cause thousands of Americans to lose their healthcare benefits. It could also lead to higher healthcare premiums, with some individuals potentially having to give up as much as 50 per cent of their salaries for premium costs. Additionally, a deal between the Democrats and Republicans, if approved by the House, could result in millions of people losing Medicaid and coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Sanders notes that research indicates approximately 50,000 Americans could potentially die each year as a consequence.

Bernie Sanders also highlighted what this development would mean for the wealthy, noting that it would allow the top 1 per cent to receive tax breaks that would further increase their wealth. He further commented on the current political climate in the United States, observing that many are supporting the Democrats while opposing “Trumpism,” and he considers that the deal reached between Democrats and Republicans on Sunday is a setback for their progress.

Sanders concluded his message by saying:

“So we’ve got to go forward, do the best that we can to ensure and protect working-class people, to make sure that the United States not only does not throw people off of healthcare, but ends the absurdity of being the only major country on earth that doesn’t guarantee healthcare to all people. We have a lot of work to do, but to be honest with you, tonight was not a good night.”
