Is it possible to look at this picture and not hear the opening chords of the Star Wars theme?
But to answer my first question briefly, yes. To answer it less briefly, almost certainly yes, come on, Disney might be a giant conglomerate prone to the mistakes of all giant conglomerates, but they’re not that dumb.
Williams has already said he’d be up for it, though Disney later confirmed that no specific arrangements had been made yet. But now even J.J. Abrams is easily admitting that this might be a project where it’d be good for the director to take a break from his usual composer, Michael Giacchino. From Digital Spy:
Michael Giacchino is an incredible composer, who I was lucky enough to begin working with on Alias. He’s truly one of the most influential members of our crew, and I think [with the Star Trek Into Darkness] score he really outdid himself. For Star Wars, it’s very early days, but I believe that, going forward, John Williams will be doing that film, because he was there long before I was.
Whatever else there is to say about the Star Wars prequels (and there’s lots)Â I remember being very impressed with Williams’ work on the movies. It’s not every artist who could return to a work they’d completed nearly two decades ago and expand on it, and I almost don’t even think about how wooden Anakin and Padme’s romantic relationship is when I listen to “Across the Stars.”
Almost.
