Queer gamers got something to smile about in PS4’s new Marvel’s Spiderman game from Sony Interactive and Insomnia. Apparently, players can see pride flags flying at several sites throughout the game, and the rainbow even appears as a large mural. Twitter was quick to point out all the Spider-pride in the game, including Eisner Award-winning writer Saladin Ahmed (Throne of the Crescent Moon):

What’s so refreshing about the appearance of the flag is that it’s not just about messaging, it’s also about accurately reflecting the city of New York and the West Village, which has a storied queer history. It may seem like a small detail, but having this kind of queer representation in gaming is a big deal. Well done, all involved!

Chelsea was born and raised in New Orleans, which explains her affinity for cheesy grits and Britney Spears. An pop culture journalist since 2012, her work has appeared on Autostraddle, AfterEllen, and more. Her beats include queer popular culture, film, television, republican clownery, and the unwavering belief that 'The Long Kiss Goodnight' is the greatest movie ever made. She currently resides in sunny Los Angeles, with her husband, 2 sons, and one poorly behaved rescue dog. She is a former roller derby girl and a black belt in Judo, so she is not to be trifled with. She loves the word “Jewess” and wishes more people used it to describe her.
