Ever since Donald Glover’s casting was announced for Solo, my first thought was, But what about a Lando movie? Turns out, Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm’s answer to that, despite being partly lost in translation, is: Sure.
According to The Playlist, as well as several other outlets, Kennedy “confirmed” at the Cannes Film Festival that a Lando Calrissian spinoff film would be next up, telling Premiere France, “We think that the next spin-off will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian. Of course, there are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca, but Lando will be next.”
However, io9 reports that her response to a question during her interview has been wildly mistranslated. A Lucasfilm representative told io9 that “[Kennedy] said it’s something she’d like to do one day in the future.” So, she wants to, but there are no definite plans as of right now.
I can’t see a Lando movie not happening, considering both fan reaction to the glimpses of Glover’s portrayal we’ve gotten in the Solo lead-up, as well as the fact that Glover is already signed on for multiple movies. We’ve also heard from our own Kaila Hale-Stern (who has seen Solo and reviewed it for us) that not only is everything we’ve heard about Glover’s turn as Lando true, but Solo is a pretty fun movie above all else, so it would make sense to capitalize on that and use one of its best components to launch a followup. Still, it looks as though we’ll have to wait a bit longer for any kind of “official” word.
