Deadline has announced that Tiffany Hadish and Melissa McCarthy are in talks to star in a movie together. While your immediate reaction might be along the lines of “that’s too much funny for one screen,” the pair will actually be taking on an adaptation of the gritty, violent Vertigo comic book series The Kitchen.
The Kitchen is a 2014 series from Ollie Masters, illustrated by Ming Doyle and Becky Cloonan. It centers around three women in 1970s Hell’s Kitchen, whose husbands are leaders of the Irish mob. When the men are arrested, their wives, Kath, Angie, and Raven, take over the business. Let’s just say, they take to it fast.
Making this adaptation even more exciting is that it will be the directorial debut of Andrea Berloff, co-writer of Straight Outta Compton. She also wrote this screenplay. So while it’s likely impossible to hide the natural comedic energy of actors like McCarthy and Haddish–and why would you want to? There’s something so enthralling about comedic actors doing dark drama–this adaptation is likely to lean into the darkness of its source material.
Haddish is reportedly signed on to star, and McCarthy is in the process of finalizing her deal to sign on. There’s no word on who’s planning to take which role, but seeing as all three women originally appeared to be white in the comic, it’s exciting that they’re not limiting themselves when casting the movie.
