The first teaser trailer has dropped for Mortal Engines, an adaptation of the first book in Philip Reeve’s quartet of young adult books. (The series has also been referred to as the Predator Cities or Hungry City Chronicles, but Reeve doesn’t like those titles.) The books are set in a fantasy world “where moving cities trawl the globe” and hunt one another down for parts. “When one city takes over another,” explains the summary, “it processes all reusable materials to create power to run the motorized wheels that enable the city to travel over the land.”
In the trailer, we see the sprawling, wheeled city of London chase down and gobble up a much smaller town. We also get our first look at Hera Hilmar as Hester Shaw, the female protagonist of the book. (No shots of Robert Sheehan as Tom Natsworthy, the male protagonist, yet.)
Mortal Engines is produced and co-written by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the team behind the iconic Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Christian Rivers, who previously worked with Jackson as a storyboard artist on King Kong, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Jackson’s three Hobbit films, is the director.
Mortal Engines is due in theaters on December 14, 2018.
